When i was on for P.K delivering veg to western international we had to pay the forklift driver £3 per drop and you could have 6 or 7 doors to deliver to. employer could pay £18 plus a entrance fee too

When I did the early morning wholesale markets many years ago it was common practice. The forkies were supplied by the market rather than the individual traders so it was always a case of trying to persuade one of them to do their jobs or pay them. Gaffer at the time knew the crack so just gave us cash to pay every night, especially as a full load might be split between half a dozen different traders within the market. Always used to amuse me that I would pull in and get tipped immediately when other, non-regular, non-paying, drivers had been sitting for a couple of hours already.
Wen i did markets a fiver got the forkie to deliver allround the market usally anything between 8 and 15 diffrent traders on 1 load.
Always pays to stay on the right side of forkie guys as they can make or break your shift

Same for me too,a tenner got the lot off in one place he then took it all to the stall holders out of spitafield market in less than 30 mins.
Well worth it.
When we use to do waste paper etc to the mills like Kemsley, whilst being loaded at the waste depots we’d get hold of a box and fill with the lads Mag’s Quick ■■■ book’s we called em. park up chuck a pile on the dash and within min’s you’d get called round to tip , never failed.
Fords Halewood every single time. late 80’s early 90’s tip for offload another tip for loading of empties. by the time you had handed in your docs/tip and the papers went flying off down the airshute, walk back to the cab and there was your name being called on the speaker.
Bit of a scam isn’t it? Although I’ve never been to the markets as described I can kinda see the benefit of tipping the forkie, although if you go the same place and see the same forkie 5 days a week it would cost you a small fortune, £100 a month or £520 a year, that’s a fair chunk of money when you think about it out of your own wages.
Never paid to get tipped, but there is a certain company I give a few “stock samples” to and they book me in and tip me faster than I can have a 15 min break.
Works for everyone. I dont have room at home in the freezer so I pass on free gifts given to me for being early. RDC tips me fast cos I pass on free gifts. I turn up early at next job and get more free samples
Common practise in the meat and veg markets Smithfield is a minimum of £20 up to about £60 depending on the number of pallets other markets such as the Great Western or the Mercabana charge an entry fee.

That’s right. They remember the generous ones just the same as we remember the nasty ones. Sometimes even a packet of cookies works as a bribe.
I have done it, But usually the markets. Other places have had the odd bottle of whiskey or a sleeve of ■■■■ at christmas.
I gave it as a tip for being tipped pretty quick. I’d just say “crack on and there’s a drink in it for you”.
But if they fannied about, then expected me to drop them some cash, Not a sniff.
If you do it every time, even when they’re slow, they’ll just take the ■■■■.
My brother used to do it all the time. it didn’t make things any quicker after a while.
There’s no point doing it if you’re on hourly pay or day rate. But that fiver can make you £100+ if you’re on trip money, or get you home handy if it’s job and knock.
Was a common thing when I worked in the Glasgow fruit mkt (88-99) not a £5 though was usually a few quid, and it was usually the driver that said to me, done it many a time free of charge!
The weetagrove boys (London) used to tip big lol

Steer well clear of accountancy mate

Told me they new my face an next time I’d wait all night to get tipped lol.
To which I would have replied, “I’m paid by the hour pal, crack on.”
Ken.
Only ever paid to tip once. Was out on a van for a day years ago. No taillift. I had a pallet of candles for a firm in Ckarks Village. There was a builder there with a telehandler. Paid him a fiver to whip the pallet off into the customers palletiaer. Claimed the fiver as expenses. Wouldn’t do it now
paying to work my arse, why is it anything to do with london ends up with you getting screwed, whether its cyclists telling you the law,£200 for the priviledge of driving through the place, cant stop,no parking, whopping fines for taking a wrong turn, screw the place.

if your gaffer gave you money to pay fair enough, otherwise it’s his prob, screw em.
Dont know if things have changed but seems some of the wholesale Fruit markets have their own FLT’s now, at least in Liverpool Fruit/veg market as I was there the other day picking one up for repair from a trader.
