Pay

Rob K:
Also, you do realise that your hourly rate is £5.73/hr which is less than the NMW?

I believe he’s only 19 though Rob but what age does the minimum wage kick in ?

Oh right I didn’t realise he was just a kid. Well in that case his questions are moot for 6 years til he reaches 25 as no-one will entertain him due to insurance co stipulations unless he finds some cowboy outfit that will happily fleece him for all he’s worth.

Slightly confused now. I’m not 19, not sure where that came from, I’m actually 21. I have a local company (previously a fairly big name in east anglia until most the business was sold off but has been restated by the son of the previous owner) willing to help me through my class 2 and class 1 test. Then I will start working for the firm and paying them back.

Read the T&Cs very carefully before agreeing to that. :bulb:

Yeah I understand that. They are a friend of the family and one of my aunts is a driver for them and one of my uncles is a mechanic for them.

Friends/family + business = recipe for disaster. Tread carefully as they don’t mix.

Love the fact your trying to put me off. That just makes me want to do it even more.

:unamused: If you think I’m trying to put you off then go and ■■■■■■■ get on with it then. Most people would be appreciative of good words of advice, especially from those that have experience with such arrangements but apparently you know best and don’t need any help or advice because you know it all already, so off you go chap. You will learn life the hard way.

LOL!!!

Anyway thanks to everyone else for actually answering the questions I had. It has helped towards me making my mind up  much appreciated

 i love your negative outlook on just about everything :unamused:

Rob K… At the end of the day your entitled to your opinion. But look at it from my point of view for just a minute. I’m 21 and have always wanted to be a truck driver, a local firm who happens to be run by a family friend who also employs 2 of my family has offered to help me through my class 2 and class 1. With the deal that I work for him and pay it off. As you know I’m not on the best wage and I also live at home so any money over what I currently get paid will be straight back into his pocket, paying off my ‘debt’ to him. I understand that you are just putting your opinion across about family/friends + business dozens work, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes it can be better, not all the time I know. At the end of the day I am very grateful to have been given the chance to finally train in what I have wanted to do and leave my dead end job. Also a ‘deal’ has not been done yet as we are trying to find the best place for me and another person to train.

Despite your accusations to the contrary, the last thing I was trying to do was “put you off”. I actually hope it works out for you and their offer is genuine; not many people get that sort of opportunity to get a foot in the door. However, whether it being down to your age and naivety or something else, you should not dismiss my comments about needing to exercise caution where friends, business and money are involved. Make sure you get any such agreement in writing and read it carefully before signing it. That way if the relationship turns sour for whatever reason at a later date there can be no arguments over what they think you owe them.

rob K keeping it real once more on truck net, the voice of stone cold realitiy. fair play rob your posts crack me up.

^^^ how many hours do you work a week on average?

Do you mean me? :open_mouth:

If you do…well, it’s hard to say because I’m not full-time. I guess it’s around 40 on average over the year. I’m on a ‘zero-hour’ contract and only go in when called upon. If they had their way, I would be doing the maximum possible, but I work to live and I don’t live to work, so after working a full week I tend to tell them not to call me for 4 or 5 days. I can afford to do this because I live on my own with no major expenses (except for my rent). So, there you go. Sorry!

If you already have family working at this company they should be able to tell you the ins and outs of the job including how many hours for how much pay and the pitfalls, if they are reluctant to do so expect it to be a bit grim, which is fair enough as not many of us run before we can walk, if you can get trained and have a permanent job then a couple of years so long you are earning over min wage won’t be too hard to stomach.

I’ve been paid all sorts of ways throughout my time driving, started off poor and got better as i specialised.

The only way you can make any meaningful comparison is to divide your top line* by the number of hours worked, presently some seem to be averaging about £8 an hour whilst others get around £15/16, on some specialist jobs you might average more than £16 an hour across a week but these will be dead mens shoes that only a break as lucky as a lottery win will get you into.

*do not make the mistake as too many do of including night out money or expenses in your pay, they are not pay they are seperate and unless you live like a hermit and eat a tin of beans for your dinner and never leave the tin can then you will spend most of your subsistence on a decent meal a couple of beers and some breakfast the following morning.

400pw if working mon-fri (normally 55ish hours)
10.50p/h if i work saturdays
14p/h if i work sundays
