Pay rate, hated by all, not what it was

as someone whos coming into the driving profeshion i’v been researching as much as I can about the industry as a hole. this is a brillant website for information and many of the members have been very helpful in giving adivce in the short time i’v been a memeber.

One of the first things that I found being menshioned alot was the avarage wages not increaseing in as many as 10 years and its even thought to have gone down by many people. another thing witch many speak of is how badly people treat driver now.

like I said I have no expirants in this profeshion what so ever but I don’t need too to know that what is being spoken here is more or less on the hole compleatly true.

the reson I can bealeave these things to be true is because the profession i’v been in for 12 years and am currantly still in “well till i’m made redunant in the next few months” has suffered the excact same problems that lorry driving has.

i started there in 2000 on minuim wage then after 6 years i got a pay rise in 2006 and that was the first and only one iv had there after. 1 pay raise in 12 years the last one being 6 yeas ago. also for the last 3 years having to work longer and harder for that money more than ever befor and still i’m going to be out of work at the end of the year !

the way in witch people in my profession get treated is at an all time badness too. in the last 4 years the daily abuse includeing verbale mothing off and pyhical violents has made me begin to hate being around the human race.

If you were wounding what my job is i’m a shop worker, retailer.

My point if any, is that during my time looking for what the hell to try and get a job doing next I found that every industry fourm is filled with the same plite that has affected yours and mine.

when you look into most jobs theres almost nothing out there that hasnt sufferd wage cuts or wage stagnation an having to work longer for less. sader still is the fact that the reson people treat an speak to you like crap is’nt because your a lorry its sadly just the way some many people treat other these days. i smiled when i read so many driver saying this as I could relate to what thay were saying and how thay felt. I always thought as being a shop worker I was looked down apon and treated like a servent or someone that is dumb and never has nay recoinishion for the job i do an the hardships it involves.

there isnt much of a point to my ramblings other than to share my thoughts on how most work forces feel these days is the same. In my search to find a new job i found that if I was to lisen to the negative pionts to anyone alreddy in a trade i’d wind up not going into anything. just the same as if anyone asked me if retail was any good by the time id finished telling all the horror storys of the last 12 years thay wound rather get a job testing sleeping pils for freddy krueger.

if anything we can take some comfort in knowing that its nothing personal to the trades we’'r all in or that the lack of good paying jobs only exsites in are own feilds of work. its just the way things are all over. if there was one thing that might improve peoples respect and manner for others is if we all spent afew days in each other shoes. I know even after just driving a lorry for a short hour i came away with a hole new found respect for what lorry drivers do.

Shame you can’t spell

That was a “Party political broadcast” by the “WE ARE MONKEYS SOCIETY”

REALLY!!!

It doesn’t really matter. My girlfriend is dyslexic. It doesn’t devalue her opinion.

You don’t have to be able to be a spelling bee to post on TruckNet.

So an I dyslexic as is my daughter & son but does that mean they are not intelligent NO is the answer a lot of people are if you want that think there are a number of English language forums on the internet that will specialise in spelling & grammar although I do know how to use spell check there 1st language might not be English but this has also been discussed a few times

At least he know how to use paragraph unlike some :unamused: which do make for hard reading in fact I just dont read them sorry

This has been discussed in the feedback forums many times

Now not knowing where you are based as lost my crystal ball but the average pay up here in the North East is £7.00 ph yep it can vary a little but about that for cat C or CE ( 1 company I know pay £7.25 Cat C £7.40 CE )

Yes you are looked down on but think there is just a lack of respect through out I do try to be polite at all times ( no I am not perfect far from it ) a smile goes a long way to help

Have a look at the jobs market in your area as well

Yes you are looked down on…

I disagree completely.

If you’re dressed like a tramp, smell like a tramp and talk like a tramp who has a bottle of whiskey for his breakfast, then people are going to look down on you whether you’re a lorry driver or not.

In my experience, when I pull up somewhere and jump out of my cab people are like “ooohhh, look at that handsome young man and that big lorry he’s driving”. The ladies get all moist and the men get all jealous. If anything, people look up to you. That’s just my experience anyway.

All this “lorry drivers are treated like crap” bull[zb] is largely down the the individual lorry drivers bringing it on themselves because of how they look, smell, act etc.

To the OP, fear not. If you’re not an absolute ape (unlike most lorry drivers), take care of your appearance and yourself (unlike most lorry drivers) treat people with respect and manners (unlike most lorry drivers) and act like an adult human being rather than an infant primate (unlike most lorry drivers), then nobody will treat you like crap or look down on you. Quite the opposite in fact.

I hope this helps.

Knob …

The initial post…
layout of post = 100%
Being able to understand first time = 100%
Spelling = who cares as the first two points covered all that I needed

Text speak or a ‘sea of text’ … thats another matter for me !!

This forum has a spell checker…shame more people don’t use it…

Dyslexia is no excuse for not using a spell checker. As far as I am aware, dyslexics are not below average intelligence and have a normal I.Q. So what’s the problem with spell check?

I would like to apologise to the op and anyone else it caused offence to for my reply It was a poor attempt at humour, and put my size 12 in without engadging my brain cell first. Apologies to all that took offence.

Agreed here , all the more valid when jobs are decreasing across the board.

I used to work for a builders merchant, if they were short handed they would call the agency for a driver, on one particular occasion an old hand driver turned up, collar, tie, clean shaven, carrying a black attache case as it turned out contained sandwiches and flask, just extremely well groomed,( he kept a hi - vis, waterproof boiler suit, boots and helmet in a holdall in his car.)

The lads i worked with thought this was hilarious, but i spoke to this chap and said he got all the work he wanted purely on his appearance, helpful, friendly demeanor and professionalism, the bosses thought that if he paid such attention to his fastidious appearance , then he would probably drive the company vehicles and deal with customers in the same manner.

just finished working for the parcel delivery branch of a v.large n.ireland trucking co. was driving a 7.5t box along country lanes and into housing estates for £6.75 ph. 5.45 am start ,help to load vans ,deliver sacks and loose parcels to couriers?? back to depot and empty van of returns and sweep it out.35mile journey to/from depot (£100 per fortnight in fuel) 6 days 1 week ,4 the next with a 8 week rota giving me a weekend off every 2 month.start work locally p/t (20 hrs p/w) as required tomorrow .will be no worse off financially. i know this sounds like a winge but i think its better than dole and jeremy kyle …things can only get better as someone once sang

Depends if you know how to spell the word in the 1st place

Most dyslexia are intelligent they just dont see the words how most people see them

As 1 of my daughters fave was "lost " instead of “lots” now a spell checker wont pick that up sorry

you must be out of your mind actually wanting to come into this profession now the state it’s in - unless you’ve been offered a decent job in the pipeline.
…'Cos otherwise get ready for a miserable life of being an agency slave, being treated like dog ■■■■, and seeing less money per week at the end of it all than a dole giro

It was actually an attempt at humour by the PO, using spelling mistakes on purpose, much like Des Lawson playing the Ponia.

Fair point - though if you look at the OP’s posting that isn’t really the case at all…and most people on here that can’t spell aren’t dyslexic, they’re thick.
