pay at pump

My Natwest bank card doesn’t work in any pay at pump station

Do you have any money in the account?

More seriously, does it work properly if you pay in the kiosk (i.e. you put the card in the Chip & PIN reader, enter your PIN and the transaction goes through without further intervention, or having to swipe it through the magnetic stripe reader)?

It is a restriction on the current account type… I have an RBS current account and once I dropped the Royalities part of it, I was told my card would no longer work at pay at pump. Which turned to be correct as Mrs Colingl has found out twice. :unamused:

It works without any problem in a Chip and Pin reader.

Having researched it a bit more, it appears it’s actually to do with the credit scoring system and the way Pay-at-Pump (and other similar services) work. Essentially, if your credit score (or the way your bank applies it) is a bit borderline, your debit card will only work “online”. This means that the full amount of the transaction has to be authorised before it can go through (to avoid the risk of you going into an unauthorised overdraft). Tesco Pay-at-Pump machines (and many others) authorise a nominal £2 transaction to begin with (to prevent use of blocked or stolen etc cards), and only charge the full amount purchased at the end of the transaction. By contrast, in most European countries thay authorise the full 99 Euros at the outset - but this has the disadvantage that the “shadow” 99 Euro debit will show against your account for a day or two (even though you only actually spent much less than that).

Natwest etc do both “online” and “offline” debit cards (all credit cards work “offline” so are not affected by this), and it is entirely up to them which sort of card an individual customer will receive.

Works fine in the kiosk, doesn’t matter what garage I use, Morrisons, Tesco, Esso etc still won’t work on the pumps

Is the one at Swindon Truckstop (Keyfuels) still hit and miss? Went in the shop once to tell them it was on the blink and got some snde comment about “read the instructions on the screen” from some fat frumpy tart.
Practice what you preach and read the cooking instructions on the frozen cash and carry food you “cook” my dear.
