I don’t know if Hedgeman sold to Barry Crooke but he owns the former Hedgeman yard on Portland which he rents to Hump and Dump skips as a transfer station.

Thanks for the comments Nigel, dont think we have had any Hump & Dump trucks, nice name.

“pete smith” Morning Dean,
Yes that was Lens first unit, ex Bass Charrington I believe, I think this Handyman survives.

Once in my life, I had to handle such a trailer with a detachable axle. A nightmare to put back into place!

Not a fan then “Froggy55”

Heres a few more pics of detatchable rear axles and necks on low loaders and some information about them.

Lee you popped a pic of the K series Dodge on yesterday that ended up with Polley’s.

The Kew Dodge was launched in 1965,and heres a bit about it.

The K series seemed a popular choice for Polley’s when the four wheeler still reigned supreme
[/quote]

Great shot of the fleet parked up.

Alot of companies had a mixed fleet although the Dodge seemed a favourite of Polley’s its nice to see the Bedford TK
and Ford D series. I assume the 2 AEC’s are Mercury’s if they are 4 wheelers and looks like a Dennis Pax.

What was the Dennis like ■■

Heres a spec sheet for the Dennis Pax.

I don’t know exactly how it was sold off, but im sure a skip hire company (possibly Biffa) were in there 1st, that was back when the helicopter base was still there, not sure if he sold up to Crooks or he just closed down and sold the yard? I’ll have to quiz my mate who worked for him. Butch who worked for him had previously left and started Portland Stone.

“troberts0”

Lee cant tell if they are Mercury’s or Marshall’s in 2 two pic’s you have posted as cant see the rear of the trucks. But the Mercury
would have been a 4 wheeler and the Marshall a 6 wheeler. They did also make a light weight Marshall 8 wheeler,as well as there
well known heavier 8 wheeler the Mammoth Major.

in a 1955 advert so assume it came out early 50’s.

The Spanish Dodge was a demonstrator on loan to Polley’s for a short time, Zebra Tipping on the door with a Fareham phone number. Presumably someone bought it after it’s demonstrator duties?

I didn’t realise that the Polley brothers owned that Leyland in your photo, I saw it at a gathering in Dorchester last December.

It was indeed quickly detatchable, but they you had to pull it out of the way by hand and it was very heavy. The worst was still to come when it had to be put back into place. It needed to be precisely put in line with the trailer, and the latter winched up. Al that by hand and on your own.

Yes thats the Eatons Reiver with the rock body on, I drove it a few times loading large roacks out of Swanworth Quarries and took them to Poole Docks when they were extending the Truckline Ferries Terminal, they were used on the waters edge to protect the land from eroding.

Hi Dean,

It was owned from new by Transport Services Southampton,it still has the air deflector in their colours, think maybe an owner driver bought it when they finished with it.

I had HCR772X and HCR 776X both IVECO’s bought from Pitters Southampton IVECO Dealers.

Hope you are keeping well.
Regards
Richard

When I worked for Reg Bugler back in 1984, I remember this DAF of Corbins being in our yard behind the St. Peters Finger pub at Lytchett Minster, mind you it didnt look like that as it had just been recovered from Bath after a roll over accident whilst negociating the hill down into Bath from the M4, I dont have any pictures but I dont think it went back on the road again, it was a mess.
