Hi Dean pinched these two shots from FB as they are in your Manor, did they not have a tie up at some stage, Buzzer
Nice photo of Towmasters Mercedes…my uncle worked for them at their Sheerness depot. Mainly ERFs then though with either flat trailers or curtainsiders. I don’t actually ever remember seeing a box trailer on Towmasters. My uncle was on nights so i used to go with him on a Friday as i didn’t have to get up for school the next day!
Chris Webb:
Nice photos Dean thanks.
I used to see Towmaster ERFs every night when on trunk on A1,they had a depot at Denaby near Doncaster and belonged to the Bell’s Whisky Group I believe. I was told their night trunk was Denaby - Newton Aycliffe - Newport Pagnell - Denaby so they didn’t hang around.
Thanks for the comments Chris. Heres a clipping.

Brilliant i remember you mentioning that before. Great as a kid going in a truck. The thing you dont realise is that fact that although
you are not driving you are actually learning alot about driving. I can remember pasing my car test and knowing the main trunk roads
to places like Bath or to Exeter in my head. So all those hours spent in the passenger seat meant you knew the whole road in your mind and knew where the bad junctions were, bends etc. You dont appreciate what you have learnt until years later when you finally start driving yourself.

Nice pics Buzzer. Yes both companies were owned by Harry Perry and i believe he also owned another company called
Blandford Transport. He had a nice fleet of trucks with predominantly Volvo trucks, although there were some other makes.
Not sure what happened to them and if anyone knows it would be good to know. Maybe he just retired and sold the trucks ?
Heres a few of his motors. They were mainly bulkers and flats and i dont remember them hauling timber.

0Still a cracking thread Dean Onward Transport were based in Pontefract Yorkshire also known as Ackworth they had some of the very first DAF’ in their fleet in the 60’s. Picture of ERF taken of the internet so NMP.
That’s Birtley depot, the load is electrical oil from Castrol at Stanlow. The depots main function was the Castrol distribution for the North East of England. That unit was driven by Paul Seymour. The E14, fleet no 340 was also a Birtley tractor, driver was Ollie Taylor,
The depot closed in 1992 when the Castrol contract came to an end.
It was the best job I ever had. After the closure I became an owner driver until I retired in 2012. Regards Kev.

Not sure Dave, you could be right never thought of that to be honest. Just assumed it was the company but it does mention Ailsa on the truck.
Ailsa imported there first Volvo in 1967 and the Volvo factory at Irvine was built in 1972.

Thanks for the reply “steam” was worth a try. There seemed to be an awful lot of blue tippers running around Poole back then that we dont know
who owned. Like you say Dennis Fall did operate a fair few,and i suppose there were a fair few owner drivers.

Shanks ran quite a few Dean but I have to say I preferred my Daf, the Volvo was very cramped inside and on breaks you couldn’t recline the seats hardly at all, with my Daf I could recline it nicely and spread my legs out, performance wise neither was any better than the other imo, downside again with the Volvo was that it was nearly a ton heavier unladen so had to be careful on certain jobs.
Tyre and Tune were based on the A444 at Castle Gresley Dean.
