Melksham, Deano, according to t’internet

F.T Collier and Son used to be based at Chippenham back in the (G)olden days. They used to have a two tone green livery, mostly ERF’s A’s and B’s but with the odd Maggie dropped into the mix… There is a Michael Collier still running now, I presume he’s a relation, based in Melksham. The last time I saw him in our place he was running a smart silver Merc Actros

Great pics again Dean, triggering some great memories

Happy New Year to you, Paul and Mark

North lincs up by Scunthorpe I think

Hi Dean,
My lad has been round and sorted my log in details out today.
The Blue 143 was operated by D R Smith from Aldridge and was previously owned by Brian Dobson, I think it maybe in Ireland but it does survive.

Eco Oils are now part of the Slicker Recycling group.

Car and Commercial Deliveries from Northfield,Birmingham Guy Big J4T
Hi Dean reading the articles brought back some memories about low bridges, once having to turn back and re-route and on a couple of occasions cars off the bottom deck and drop the top deck go under and reload other side that was artics and on a wagon and drag once with second hand 1100s on board having to really tighten the chains down on the suspension(Hyrolastic) gaining two three inches with the mate up top giving a running progress report, middle of the road with arch bridges, trees were also a PITA. At drops some checkers were very fussy going over cars with a fine tooth comb before giving a signature, others were happy with a walk round, spare wheel, toolkit etc., No special route maps no height sticks back then just word of mouth from mates.

This reminded me of an occasion many years ago when I worked at a Austin distributor. They had a car delivery and each one the 3 cars on the top deck of the trailer had a deep gash- about 1+ inches deep! -right along the roof. The screens had gone too. Apparently the driver was as surprised as the bloke who was waiting to check them. That problem took a while to sort out and those cars hung about for a long time before they moved on. Doubtless 3 customers were disappointed too.

I imagine you certainly have to have your wits about you with new cars on the top. Especially as the trucks basically keep the bushes and trees cut back these days, you only have to follow a lorry and see how the trees by the side of the road just clear the tops of the trailer. I imagine the other thing that was very easy to do if you were not
concentrating was push the wrong button and move the upper deck down by mistake. There must have been loads of crushed cars over the years Oily.

Re your comments on height limits and no height stickers in the cab, that became law on march the 6th 1979.

I imagine it was very easily done to damage cars whilst driving normally purley down to my comments above re trees etc not being cut back by the Councils like they
use to.

We have had a fair few of Leggetts motors on here.

Dean B,
Good morning, Rheemco had a plant making steel drums in Silverthorn Lane in Bristol. Delivered two loads a day from Port Talbot steelworks back in the day before the M4 was fully completed.
Regards, Allan

Blue line transport was always on that contract from the steelworks as Allan said, they were down by st phillips estate James timms based on the old quedgley army camp by j12 m5 Gloucester

quote; Dent motor,.anybody know where they are based?

Dents are based in Penrith area,.and afaik are the main subbies to AW Jenkinson.

Hi Dean,
The ERF is one of Barry? Squires from Bloxwich, a couple of his former ERF’S are still around, a Merc user now I believe.
Birds are now part of the Montgomery group.

Gullivers were a Bristol based rental company owned by Gabriel Harding , the only transport I can remember them doing was in I think the 90’s they had a fleet of refrigerated lorries doing europe which I dont think lasted for long . They built up a massive fleet of rental /contract hire lorries until going bust a few years ago .
Sad end to a long established company .
