Not sure who the Seddon Atkinson 300 belongs to but looks like ICI colours ■■

Just a wild guess Dean but that looks like Poole Rd in Branksome. “UB” was a Leeds area code.

Out of curiosity, was the 300 as bad as the 200 (or its reputation at least)?

Morning Dean, another nice batch of photos.
That Sed -Atki 6 wheeler is in ICI colours as you say and was used for carrying “Genklene” a trade name for trichloroethane,a dry cleaning agent.Runcorn Transport Services had the contract at one time but that wagon has a UB Leeds reg so maybe it’s a Tankfreight vehicle.

At Tilcon we ran one 300 and three 200’s at our quarry and they were pretty trouble free really. The 300 had the ZF 6 speed box but would have been better with the splitter box like Hoveringham had on theirs as the change was rather slow, however the International engine had no issues in the three years we ran it. The rear suspension wasn’t brilliant though.

The 200’s again had very few problems, one had a ‘soft’ cam shaft and needed the tappets adjusting reguarly (they also had to be adjusted in the sequence stated by International to get the best results and keep them smoke free) but otherwise they were fine in the three years we ran them, however if they were on uneven ground the gear lever had a habit of lifting out of its locating cup! Not a pleasent truck to drive though, the first time I launched one into a bend that my Foden eight wheeler usually went round flat out loaded I nearly ran out of road!! :open_mouth:

Would have had a fairly hard life i expect “ParkRoyal2100” as would have been in the local landfill quarry a few times

Yes Thorn had 10 or 12 drivers based at Spennymoor. They were paid as staff with an extremely attractive wage but fixed with no overtime. They also booked them into 4 star hotels when overnight. They had quite a steady income and lifestyle with no incentive to work efficiently. Unfortunately accountants eventually discovered it cost them more to deliver the Tricity cookers than they were selling them for. We took over most of their fleet of D series Ford which had 30 ft trailers and drivers either retired or were promoted into jobs in the factory. However as you imagine it was a very tricky job to negotiate as at the time at Spennymoor they employed 7500 people and the union was very militant. In a 5 year period for example they never had a day without either a strike, go slow, overtime ban or work to rule. 3 drivers would not budge, and their Ford D series needed replacing, At the same time the TV tube factory which I think was at Durham was closing as tubes were being replaced by modern technology. The transport was contracted to Cawthorn & Sinclaire of Birtley (Near Gateshead) They didn’t want to buy new Tractor Units and therefore bought 3 from Cawthorn. I forget where the trailers came from, but we painted them for them in our paint shop. The funny thing was they provided a diagram of how they wanted the trailers painting based on a Ford D series boxvan. Our signwriter pointed out that the writing would look silly if he kept the same dimentions on a forty foot trailer, as the height was about the same but the length was about half as the boxvans were 20ft. So we had to wait about 10 days whilst they contacted the designers and had meetings etc to see what should be done until eventually the reply came back ‘Do it as what the sign writer thinks would look best’

Hi Dean. IIRC the blue Barnfather vehicles were or had been on contract to Thorn the electrical component manufacturer.

Thorn Heating had a factory in Team Valley trading estate. I cannot remember the year or the name of the Haulier but he ran about 20 Commer tractors with 28ft flat trailers delivering Boilers and radiators manufactured in the factory. We were approached by a Thorn senior executive from their head office in Enfield. & asked would we consider buying the business and taking over the contract which they would happily renew with us, as the owner wished to retire as he was quite old. We had discussions and agreed the price and with talks with the Thorn executive I suggested we would over a year or so renew the fleet with 40ft tautliner trailers and heavier tractor units, pointing out this would be a lot more efficient.
My dad had talks with one of our oldest drivers Ray Hornby who he trusted & felt could run the Gateshead operation and talks were progressing smoothly until it was put to a main board meeting of Thorn Electrical Industries who decided by using us they would be putting too many eggs in one basket. We were told we could have the Heating Contract but we would have to pull out of the Smart & Brown Domestic Appliance operation at Spennymoor, but not have both.

As a consolation we were given the contact to deliver the spares & repairs delivery contact which was one van (see photo) I cannot remember when but Barnfather & Wilkes were tipper operators mainly carrying Coal from their depot at Sherburn Hill, Durham (by memory) and eventually they took over the heating product deliveries manufactured at Team Valley

To illustrate the different interpretation of the painting of the Thorn trailer :

Both these trailers were painted in our paint shop with writing done by our sign writer Peter Butler. The first being one of our trailers where it was our choice The second being one of their own where they insisted the lettering was exactly as their designer had drawn (On a 20 ft boxvan). See earlier post
