Many thanks for the comprehensive explanation Chris ! I seem to recall Ian Fowler telling me Scotts Of Nottingham sold P & O a number of Atky tractor units. As regards that terrible spec CU220/ DB 6:600/ Group axle I recall that I had three Borderers on the fleet with that poxy gear box, '73, '74 & '75. The later ones did a decent job from memory, one had the D85 diff and the other had the Eaton 2 speed axle. But the '73 unit was the worst Atky we ever operated, maybe double shifting it brought out it’s failings quicker but we had problems with the Group axle and we changed the DB box twice from memory and then finally the engine gave problems over heating ! It was 18 months old when I sold it ! And what “rubbed the salt in” was it was a unit I had to beg for at the time when they were in short supply, I paid “List” plus £250 notes sweetner ! :frowning: Happy days ! Cheers Dennis.
0
A shot of the “offender” when it was new.

Now then Dennis, it may well be that Scotts (Penrith depot) sold them some motors - I think that, in the pre-Seddon days, N.I.T., at least, was a Head Office account with Atkinson, and wouldn’t have had to buy through a dealer. Mind you, as you allude, you’d be trying to get motors from anywhere you could at that time, and they were certainly buying them in large numbers.

Concerning the spec, with the ■■■■■■■ max torque being at 1500rpm, but falling away below that, it was OK on the level, as you’d change up at max revs and it drop nicely onto 1500 rpm in the next gear, except… the gap between 4th and 5th was such that it picked up in the next gear at more like 1350, and after a longer pause in the change, so upward changes from 4th gear on any kind of climb were a bit of a non-starter unless it was a gentle climb and the clutch brake worked. It was better with a Gardner, though, and its almost flat torque curve.

Bowker used to spec them with DB 6-speed for trunk motors and Fuller for roamers, on the grounds that the night trunk men couldn’t handle a Fuller! The experience with the DB box also, was that the bearings couldn’t handle the ■■■■■■■ at max torque - I see you mention gearbox changes.

Thanks for your comments “240 Gardner”

“240 Gardner” Although i cant think of one at the momment there were quite alot of big companies that

Haha no mate but I did meet Leslie Crowther on a few occasions when he was hosting “The price is right” I often took sets from our yard to the massive Central studios just down the road
I did once meet Stephenie Beecham as one of our 401s was used in the opening scene of her programme “Connie” which was about the rag trade
It was set in Nottingham (when we did have a clothing industry)
They used my Dad’s lorry he had to drive the lorry stop then a actor got in and said a few words
Then my Dad drove off afterwards
I think it’s still on YouTube

Nice side of the job Gaz !

That Foden must have been almost unique in those far off days ! you never saw motors “blinged up” like that very often, but a great shot all the same. Cheers Dennis.

Think “Bright Red”, Dean. As Bewick says, it was most unusual ti see a sizeable fleet with a bit of bling on, but Dee Valley were one of the few. Our little town was right on the route used by the North Wales and the North West hauliers ( no M5 & M6 in those days and certainly no Severn Bridge!). We lived opposite the transport yard where my father worked and most of the DVT drivers would give a blast on those horns as they passed. I can’t say if it’s true or not but the story was that if their drivers wanted to “posh 'em up” a bit, the company would pay half the cost. Certainly didn’t happen in my case- I bought all four auxiliary lights and the radio out of my own pocket!

own ! :unamused:

Atkinson Venturer KBU 371P was originally operated by AJ Clarke demolition of Oldham who purchased it new in August 1975.
It was later sold on to Tremar Transport above were it is above pictured loaded with stone flags out of a mill in Bacup for delivery to Melksham.
After Tremar finished trading it was then sold it on to John Killingbeck below…

KBU was the penultimate Venturer built by Atkinson and, on Dr.John’s ownership, it became one of his “Mk.3 Atkinsons” i.e. it gained a 400 Series cab, and which was quote a big job to fit, I gather

The original cab lay in the yard until Killingbeck finished operations, and then failed to sell at the auction. Here it is leaving the yard the following week, along with the very first Riding sleeper cab, and which also failed to sell.

BVB 457H Atkinson Viewline T3046X by Gardner 8LXB, on Flickr

I didn’t take a photo of KBU in its re-cabbed state, but here are a couple of other Atkis which had the Mk.3 treatment:

P.S. in all the years the cab lay in the yard, it became home to a feral or semi-feral cat, and which brought up at least one litter of kittens in there.

When it came to the auction time, it was discovered that the long-missing cat was in there, and by which time it was rather mummified! It was still there when we took it away, but one of the A Team gave it a decent burial… in Bowker’s skip!

That shot of The Alston Iron Foundry Commer Steer is interesting, we used to stop with them at Durose Care at Newcastle-U Lyme IIRC they used to deliver castings into the West Midlands and reload with Foundry sand at Bromsgrove for home. I think they are long gone now but I reckon they would have bought their Commers of J.H. Henderson who were Rootes Group and Commer dealers IIRC. Hendersons also ran a fine haulage outfit based down in Langwathby nr. Penrith but they operated Leylands in the earlier years and ERF’s in later times. Cheers Bewick.

I’m pretty sure that it’s a Pete Davies photo from one of his books.

I didn’t know that Henderson was a CV dealer, but I used to talk to Tony quite a bit as we often subbed work to him in the 80s and early 90s - always a gentleman to deal with. John Douglas was working for him at that time too. He ran an Atki or two alongside his ERFs as well

Hi Chris, J H Henderson & Sons was a old established family firm based in Alston where the other branch of the family ran the garage and motor business, obviously with Alston being up " int sticks" it was sensible to run the haulage side down near the main roads i.e. nr. Penrith. So in later years Tony ran the haulage operation and his cousins ran the Alston operation. Now I don’t know whether you ever met Tony’s father Bob ( One of the Sons of J.H.) but he was some character, it was him that built up the haulage side he used to roam all over the UK visiting contacts ! He would occasionally pop into see us at Milthorpe always at lunch time and with a bag of fish and chips, " Is there a brew on lads"? Bob always ran a newish Hillman/Singer car which would come from the Alston garage and IIRC Bob lived in Alston. During the 70’s we did exchange a bit of traffic regularly with JHH and as you say Tony was a very decent Chap to deal with. His Brother Ian was a Policeman in Kendal for years ! Cheers Dennis.
