Anyone know if steel haulier H.E.Samson from Colnbrook is still going ■■

I regularly loaded out of H E Sampson at Colnbrook in the 70s/early 80s. My young son,
(now 52) travelled with me in the school holidays. Sampsons was under the flight path for Heathrow, he was very excited and overawed when in the space of a few minutes Concorde, then a 747 Jumbo flew right over us on takeoff. The speed of Concorde, and the noise was spectacular, then the very noisy Jumbo which hardly seemed to be moving was a talking point with him for weeks after. I remember all of Sampsons company cars had the prefix HES on the number plates. Regards Kev.

Thanks for the comments Kev regarding H.E.Sampson.

I know what you mean about the noise of Concorde it was something else to hear that take off or when it flew overhead.

The 747 was another iconic plane and its a shame that most of those and alot of the awesome A380’s have been retired
during this covid pandemic. The first time i took off in a A380 i wondered if we were actually going to lift off as it
seemed so slow going down the runway. But that might have something to do with it usually weighing well over 500 tons
on take off on long haul flights !
Take off speed for a A380 is around 180/200mph but does not feel like it when you are on one.

Paul caught this pic of a Emirates A380.

Have a fair bit on Concorde.

Wonder who ran the A reg iveco tractor unit?
Italeri made a 1/24 kit of that called the iveco fiat cowboy complete with the stacks and spoilers, didn’t realise they sold in the UK.

Great concorde info, we were the envy of the world with that, Anglo French engineering doing what the Americans couldn’t do.

Great photos as ever.

Hi Dean, 1966 at Bristol heading for Toulouse.
Oily

The “holes in the side” of the Albion Sugar Foden are handwheel controls for the discharge valves, I believe the hose connections were at the rear. The Sentinel steamer: a friend has one and gives folk rides around his village on New Years Day. I was offered a ride but would be unable to get up into the cab nowadays. He attends a lot of rallies with it and drives it from Doncaster to Lincoln and then down to the Great Dorset Steam Fair and back home, I passed it a couple of years ago on the A34 between Chievely and Didcot. He drives and his wife fires.

Pete.

Dean B
Good morning, Re the post on Sampsons Colnbrook. I used to deliver steel there back in the seventies and they were steel processor’s not haulage contractors. They were taken over by British Steel and I was still delivering there up until I retired in 2011. I don’t know if the place is still operating but the comments on the noise from Concorde are spot on, it would set car alarms off
Regards Allan

I’d be interested to know who previously owned that L reg A series showmans motor with the sleeper, it looks a tidy professional conversion.
Ex Middle East running motor perhaps?

Possibly Rob,someone ,may recognise the reg number ?

Was thinking the same. Maybe the cab is ex Erick Vicks or Lowes from Paddock Wood

Possibly “Suedehead”. Have some stuff on Lowes somewhere.

That A Series has a “WY” Yorkshire West Riding plate, but I’ve no idea who ran it originally.

Great stuff on Concorde Dean, I was lucky enough to do a job for shanks down at Heathrow in one of the BA Concorde hangers, amazing being up close to such an iconic aircraft. Went on board one when I was younger at Duxford, would imagine it’s still there. To think that Concorde was around for close on 50 years ago and we have nothing to replace it with in this day and age is unbelievable really. A backward step?

working on one there.
