Hi Deanthe Drinkwater artic was nicknamed ‘the Barge’ or ‘the Queen Mary’. They were big news back in the day.
It was so big that when it was tipped near Heathrow airport , air traffic control had to be informed and after tipping the driver had to shovel the clouds out of the sheet box !!![]()
Must admit it did look a big old trailer for 1971 !

“DEANB” PMP Logistics Scania.Anyone know where they are from ■■PMP Logistics were from Fareham, and were owned by John Ward, who had previously run Bulldog International at Andover, I believe. They were one of the core of hauliers that I used at MOL in the 2000s, and they also worked, I think for NYK and OOCL. They were a decent outfit with a tidy fleet. Companies House says that they were wrapped up in 2012 - perhaps that was John Ward’s retirement, but I don’t actually know, as I escaped from the world of shipping lines in 2009.
Thanks for the info Chris.

Anyone know where the Roadways Container Scania is from ■■I don’t think you can identify which depot from looking at the motor but, in the 2000s, RCL had depots in Southampton, Felixstowe, Barking, Birmingham (replaced by Birch Coppice), Trafford Park, Leeds and Coatbridge. I think it was 2008 when it was privately bought out from Maersk, but it was later acquired by Maritime and then disappeared.
Thanks for the info Chris.

Anyone recognised the Atkinson ■■This was built by Walsh & Dearden of Darwen out of a tractor unit, but I don’t know the identity of the donor vehicle. They ran it on local work as a flat until the early 1980s, when it was sold to Andrew Donelan of Darwen - I have a photo somewhere when newly painted in Donelan’s colours.
I don’t know the whole trail, but it ended up with the ill-fitting curtain-side body on it, and which had previously been on a Mk.1 Atkinson rigid 6 (PTD 990C, a stretched 4-wheeler which had worked up to the early 90s) and then VBV was owned for a while by Kevin Dennis. It was rallied by him and then by others, but I heard that it was cut up more recently. Photo here: flickr.com/photos/pete247/28368 … BMn-T2onJB
You certainly know your Atkinson’s Chris.

… I recall Jimbo saying that side tippers weren’t up to much, when he sees this he’ll gen us up. Cheers Coomseyyoutube.com/watch?v=MF85rI9oyeM&t=398s
Those are side tippers in that video. There is a driver opening the gates from about 1:40. Considering the huge loads, they seem to do OK.The Chinese are turning everything we think we know on its head. If you hadn’t seen the videos, would you have believed that 6-axle artics would carry well over 100tons, every day, in ordinary operation? The vehicles seem to survive but, on the other hand, most of the kit in those videos isn’t much more than a year old.
Impressive, but I’m sure Jimbo mentioned that without some sort of hopper he would tip on the run or risk having to shovel out between the wheels, mind you the Chinese are crafty bugas ! Bet the tyre man n welder would never be put on short time! Cheers Coomsey
Dont know much about the Chinese trucks “coomsey” but alot of chinese stuff seems to break fairly quickly.

“paul motyka” “coomsey” “paul motyka” Can someone tell me what model CAT this is?
Picture taken at Holme Hall Quarry Stainton after Tarmac took over Butlers in 1979.
[attachment=0]cat 992 loading shovel.should be working on face,stock shovels down that day…
If I were a betting man Paul I’d have said 980/88 C but they’re all pretty much the same to look at. Either way it looks more than man enough for that job, did it go down the hole loading dump trucks? Cheers Coomsey
Thanks for the reply Coomsey.Someone did tell me it was a 992,but I am the same as you no idea about different models.
The stock shovels were down that particular day so they had this filling in for them, like you say the main job was keeping the 17 Foden dumpers busy supplying the crushers.I remember when Butlers won a contract to supply stone for the M62 at Gildersome with 350,000 tonnes of stone the dumpers were flying around the quarry.I can still picture all those scenes in my head, great days as a young 11yr old what memories I can recall.
Looks a bit small for a 992 but could be I suppose. I bet it rattled the Foden mens teeth with the first bucket full .350,000t , they’d be on for the bonus !Thanks for your input Paul & coomsey.
Who did you drive for Paul ?
I never went driving for a living, instead I ended up as a mechanic for Butlers but not on lorries,it was at the British Leyland dealership they had.I went with the drivers at Butlers for 6 great years but must have thought to myself I don’t fancy driving these lorries for a living.I did try to get a transfer to the lorry garage but the director who ran the BL Dealership blocked it,saying I have plans for you here then after Tarmac bought them out they closed the garage & I left for pastures new.![]()

Hi Dean
You were asking about this Scania a couple of pages ago, it looks very much like MGF, a specialist UK wide company who provide temporary support structures to the construction industry. They have a depot at Langley Moor near Durham City and seem to run a fleet of 6 wheel Scanias. I often see them carrying what looks like steel shuttering for treching etc.
