PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

DeanB wrote about Waters and Siddall’s: Thanks for the info Pete,if you do speak to your mate about the tie up between the two companies can you let me know
as Paul wanted to know.

Had a word with my mate who drove for Waters in the 60’s and knew George Siddall from the 40’s when he lived in Stanton in Peak where they were based. He was busy this morning, his elderley farmer friend lives on his own and was having problems with a cow calving so he got up early to go and assist with the calving tackle, at the age of 82 and not in the best of health he still likes to get his hands dirty and mother and child are doing well!

Anyway George Siddall moved his base from Stanton down to Darley Bridge in the fifties and built a garage there, Waters already had a small yard there and the two companies were run seperately. George Siddall had a house there as well. They ran all makes of vehicles, Atkinson, Seddon, Maudsley, Foden, ERF, Leyland and Bedfords. Later George’s wife died and I suppose he was getting on in years as well, as were most of the drivers that I remember, so decided to sell up in the seventies and Waters bought the premises as they were expanding steadily.

One reason why Waters kept the Siddall name on was so they could expand the fleet by using both companies as Waters on their own had reached their licensing limit and doing this made it easier.

Pete.

Windrush - thanks for the information - I often wondered what the tie up was with the same livery and operating base - Brilliant!!!

Didn’t they used to run the Southampton motors out of Eling Wharf (like so many others)? Having said that, they sold out to Wincanton many years go, anyway.

Hanbury Davies trucks were based in Marchwood, not Eling wharf

Hi Dean
back in the 60’s Drinkwater had about 200 vehicles. When they amalgamated with Sabey’s in 1978 they had about 35 with Sabey slightly less. The late Stan Ennor owned Drinkwater Sabey and the fleet was being steadily replaced/increased when he suddenly died and the company was taken over by Attwoods and then BFI I think.
They introduced a new livery and before long the Drinkwater Sabey name was gone.

Just for you Dean, I’m spoiling you  nmp

Hi Dean,
Boughey distribution are from Wardle in Cheshire near Nantwich, they have recently opened a new warehouse in Crewe.

They get containers in with items like princes tinned foods, pallet the goods up,then the pallets get distributed to supermarkets and cash and carrys etc.

Used to sub out of there in early 2000s they had moved to volvo from erf and fodens at that time.

Steve

Thanks for the info Steve, good stuff chap.

“Chris Webb ,did you ever go to the Texaco depot on Poole docks, where this Merc is heading back to. They used to
run Marathon’s and Roadtrains which i remember well. The Merc’s i dont remember which is odd so i wonder if they
were trailing them and never bought many ?”

Hi Dean. No,only PD Storage. The only Texaco depots I went in were Llanelli and Canvey Island.

Ok Chris, PD Storage does not ring a bell were they on the docks ? :unamused:

Its amazing how many fairly decent sized fleets have been bought up by one of the big boys. Its a shame all these smaller
companies are disappearing bit like when Framptons were taken over. :frowning:

Hi Dean
Thanks for the Drinkwater S20
That one unusually for them, as they were committed Gardner users, had a Foden 2 stroke which kept cracking its heads. It was used as a demonstrator for potential customers as the Powell Duffryn system was new in the UK.

Hi Dean,

Hope you and Paul are keeping safe and well, this thread gets better and better thanks for all your hard work and time.

Barker and Geary are still going strong in Kings Somborne I don’t think they run any transport now but are well known for their fencing and gates in the area.Used to meet them in different forests in the South,a chap named Peter Phippen drove for them at one time.

Regards
Richard

Check this link I posted today, there’s one of Heygates on the move cheers Coomsey

Hi Dean Kings Sombourne was the home of Barker and Geary midway between Romsey & Stockbridge, there yard was behind what I assume was the family bungalow only a small yard in the beginning but they specialised in making automated gates and general fencing materials, Chairs Buzzer.
