PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

boardo96:
Evening all, sorry this is a little late as I’ve been catching up with the posts, I recognise as couple of motors from a few pages back.
I’m sure the ERF is 1 of Express Dairies, they had a depot in Honiton,
and I’m not sure but the colour scheme of the Routman is a lot like Glendenings of Ashburton, I’ve seen some pictures somewhere of their graveyard in their quarry and I’m sure there were some like this.
Nice to see some good photos posted by all. Hope all are well and keeping clear of this dam virus. Nigel

Morning Nigel, Totally forgot about Glendinnings motors and i reckon you are right about the Routeman.
Posted an article aout Glendinnings on page 147. It looks like they changed their colour scheme at some point
looking at this article from 1968 and they never had the trucks sign written back then.

Hi Dean ,great content as usual ! Rossiter and James were based at Parkend in the Forest of Dean ,looks like scrap bound for Llanwern .

Good stuff Keith, its been a while since we have had a Rossiter & James motor on here.

Anyone know what B & B stands for on the Volvo F86. Loaded with rolls of paper ■■

A distinct lack of load security roping on that F86 trailer!

David

It was Operators like that that gave the industry a bad name----- absolutely disgusting mess IMHO ! Bewick.

Back in 1957 a new beast of a truck was built by Atkinson Trucks called the Omega for operation in the oil fields of the Middle East.
Amazingly only 5 were ever built ! :open_mouth:

There would have been a fair bit of competition back then as manufacurers like Thornycroft built Antars,Sandmaster,Big Ben
also for that type of operation along with various other manufacturers. (See pages 409 and 437.)

This features some of the manufacturers that were also building heavy weight trucks.

Heres an intresting article that our man Chris Gardner was involved in about the history of the Omega.

Atkinson certainly marketed it and it featured in various brochures and adverts in the late 1950’s/1960’s.

The original prototype built in 1957 was fitted with the Rolls Royce 250 bhp motor, and in 1958 two more prototypes were built.
One had a 275 bhp Rolls Royce fitted and the second one had a ■■■■■■■ 335 bhp engine fitted.

I wouldn’t worry about it Denzil they’re long gone now a bit like another firm of that time

Well Dan’l I believe the term is called “Fact Check” :unamused: and I can tell you that Bewick Transport Services Ltd. is very much alive and well ! However, while I am not at liberty to divulge the Company’s future plans  all I would say to you is when the Foden is “wheezing” lightly loaded no doubt, up some of the grades on the UK M/ways you should drive well to the left and keep your elbows in Mate ! :frowning: Otherwise you may get under the feet and possibly “baulk” the smart signal red 80 tonner that wants to get on past ! :sunglasses:   You could always get sucked along in the backdraught if you knocked the Foden out of cog and save a bit on diesel !

Denzil I couldn’t give 2 hoots it’s got 16 gears so when it won’t go in bottom gear I may have to lower the diff ratio but if you’ve got a 80 tonne scrapia that cost £6,000 7 yrs ago that is still worth that now then best of look to you !

The sackloaders were fairly common at one time, I remember one company having them fitted to all their lorries but the drivers rarely used them as most of their work was loading bags from mills where they came down a shute.

Pete.

My old firm had one fitted to the rear of a Bedford S-type flatbed and driven by PTO. The reason for it was two-fold- Those were the days when many combine harvesters still dumped the (HEAVY!) bags of grain onto the ground and it saved the wages of one man when loading. It was also useful for loading bags of apples and pears, again from ground level. They worked really well, the only downside being that timing by the loader was critical as if the driver wasn’t ready to catch the bag on his back, the thing would shoot the bag halfway down the vehicle bed, causing substantial foul language and recriminations!

Evening gents. Sounds like most of these have been answered apart from the FL10 at the top,
looks like an ex Pattern Bros motor from Ilminster, they had a few of these.
NWF also got a place at Atherington nr South Milton.
Take it the shot of the Evans yard is the old Barnstable depot so lm guessing most of the shots of the
North Devon trucks were possibly taken on the 361 link road ?

Olloquiegui still going Dean. Long pedigree in mainly dry freight. Website - olloquiegui.eu/

Being a newbie to the site I’m still catching up on this and many excellent threads, might well take months! You have quite the collection of transport media Dean, and at the risk of placing you as some sort of wedding reception DJ taking requests, do you happen to have the LDD of Van Mannen (the red and white outfit not Koel Transporte) that Lllewellyn wrote? Gives some very familiar insight into European work in the 80’s and some nice shots of their Dafs. Loaded in their yard at Barneveld many years ago - decent outfit now defunct. Superb effort mate, thank you, great reading.

I could not remember the name but i think you are spot on with that Volvo being an ex Patten motor. Funny enough this
cracking pic of one of their AEC’s arrived this week in the latest batch of pics. No doubt Graham will confirm if thats a
genuine AEC sleeper cab or a conversion ?
