W & J Riding Atkinson Borderer Reg No XTF 870L Fleet No 29 ‘Masterfull’ was registered new to Riding’s on the 29th of March 1973 at a cost of £5,322.48p plus vat.
Based at Teesside depot it is seen above in its original role on contract to ICI Ltd plastics division at Wilton works.
This was one of six tractor units fitted with the Gardner 180 engine and plated at 32 tons GVW.
After eight years service XTF 870L was eventually sold on to a Mr J McGarrie of New Longton Preston for £1,000 plus vat on the 28th of September 1981.

I’m sure you won’t mind this quick diversion from this excellent thread. I’ve just caught up on the last few pages of this thread and some great photo’s still coming on, by coincidence reading 8LXBV8BRIAN’s post about the Farrell Mercedes quote; Stu ended up with LBB 815P day cab 400 SED/ATK no need for a sleeper and Les Newton got it next. Just some info on it if its PTY 884M. Great time with this motor.

The Les Newton mentioned is also in a book I’ve been reading today about the Normandy battles after D-day, hence the coincidence. Les was in the 1st Tyneside Scottish which fought a bloody battle in the Defence of Rauray in July 1944 against battle hardened SS Panzer Division troops, the Battalion gained a battle honour from this action which is still remembered today in the present TA Tyneside Scottish unit. I knew Les from his time with Alfred Ellis transport in Newcastle and he was a lovely fellow always smiling and getting on with his job, I doubt the workshop fitters knew of his past when they occasionally tried to wind him up, all in fun of course. I thought I’d just pass this on as it was nice to see his name. Les is here with pals at a Regimental Reunion in 1989 from the book Breaking the Panzers, in the centre in dark Blazer behind the seated group, smiling as usual. Franky.

The green MAN artic tipper belonged to Barnet & Graham of Penrith who became the local MAN dealers, but I will say no more about them, needless to say we didn’t run any MAN’s at Bewick Transport even though the MAN “concessionaires” from Reading supplied a number of long term demos and were desperate to get them into the Bewick fleet, but not while those ■■■■■■■ at Borderman Trucks( Barnet & Graham) were involved ! Cheers Bewick.

Great to see pictures of western transport lorries my stepfather was a driver in those days , eventually became transport manager .
Great memories of school holidays going with him in AEC Mandators to start with then the 110 scania’ s
like the one in the photo

Hi Logger,
One of my first jobs as a new salesman with Unit Commercials was to deliver the new 110’s to Western tramsport on a beaver tail low loader, always late evening, Two at a time ( when they finished for the day) and chaining the Mandators on for the run back to Salisbury, always wet and windy. Can you imagine a truck salesman doing that to day ? but a good grounding.
Then of course I had to sell them but as i started driving in them I had not real problems. Western transport was a good company to deal with, Harvey

Harvey,
I’m a truck salesman presently (Scania) and always deliver all of my new vehicles personally and do full handover and driver training - given, I don’t deliver them on a transportor or low loader, however I could if required, all that said, there’s not many of us left with this ability!!! (I am Ex driver though)

Knowles have been in and out of bulk transport over the years, usually grain or sugar beet. Currently I think that they are “in”. A very successful Cambridgeshire based business with extensive warehousing and order picking facilities.

they were referring to W & J Riding.

Hello Ant,

I know your dad drove for Comarts ,but i dont think there are any of them so far ! There might be a
Moorlock one ,dont think there are any of Thor, possibly a few Beresfords. However i will have a look.
There could be some in the next batch !

Will send you a PM !

Paul, the picture of the white ERF’s i found on the net and it said “ridings new lorries 1992” ■■ I assume
they were referring to W & J Riding.

Three brand new ‘E’ Series ERF E12TX Perkins engined 4X2 chassis cabs are seen here after delivery direct from the ERF factory at Sandbach to W & J Riding’s Longridge depot.

These were part of the largest order ever placed by the company and are pictured here on the 31st of October 1992 shortly before having their 5th wheel coupling assembly, mudguards and rear lights fitted in W & J Riding’s own workshops.

Tom Riding who took the photograph recalls…
.
“I always thought that any new vehicle joining our fleet was lucky i.e. it would be worked hard but maintained to a very high standard also i find it difficult to accept that the ERF company is no longer with us”.
