PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

Love the Leyland Cruiser photos and operating information Dean .

Dean Mullard’s had a factory on the road leading West out of Southampton just before the M271 roundabout, had a mate Dave Williams RIP who was a buyer for them many years ago, not sure what they produced other than it was electricals of some type, Buzzer

Looked up Mullards and they had a custom built factory as I said at Millbrook completed in 1957 producing electronic resistors and the like.

Chris Webb:
Hi Dean.
The Mullard Guy artic would be one of London Carriers, owned by the Philips Electrical Group. They carried a lot of cathode ray tubes etc.
The D and D Iveco could possibly be D and D Transport from Dundee,it does have a Scottish plate. If so they were commonly known as Dusk till Dawn and Dawn till Dusk Transport, make whatever you like of that.
The Hill’s Crusader isn’t the one from Botley, they were from Derbyshire - maybe Ripley. Somebody will put me right.

Mullards were also part of Philips - and had two plants in Southport; on Balmoral Drive in Crossens, and on Crowland Street in Blowick - both of which produced valves and associated components for the manufacture of TVs, radios & hi-fi equipment. My maternal Grandmother was among lots & lots of people I knew who worked at Crossens - a site which included the original Vulcan works after Tilling Stevens bought them and moved the firm to the south. That site has only just, in the last couple of months, been cleared for redevelopment - having been derelict for nearly twenty years.

Hi Dean, Bandvulc are from Plymouth, but they also have an operation at Martland Park in Wigan. They specialise in
remould tyres for commercial vehicles. Their original location up here was at Bradshaw Street in Orrell, 2 miles from .
Wigan, and half a mile from Junction 26, M6. This site is now the location of my Doctors Surgery and Pharmacy.

Cheers, Ray.

I’m surprised to see that the turbocharged 11. litre Leyland engine delivered only 209 bhp in 1981. In 1974, Berliet issued a 8,82 litre natural aspiration engine delivering 192 bhp.

Cracking shot Dean! As the others have already mentioned, it’s the other Hill’s from Pye Bridge, which operated this Leyland DAF too, was equiped with hydraulic suspension made by Ginaf if I remember correctly. You’ve posted an article about it some time ago on the HH thread mate  .

Does anyone know what happened to the Leyland/DAF/Ginaf unit?

I remember their four wheeler Seddons, and their mixers of course. John Williams tippers, Leyland four and six wheelers, were almost daily visitors to Ballidon quarry for foundry limestone, as were Hancock’s of Dudley with a green Ford, and also Ashmans brown tippers who’s drivers all seemed to have been working there for donkeys years or even longer!!.

Transcontinental does have a Hartlepool Co. Durham reg just wondering if it is one of Dents of Spennymoor ? They did operate a few Transcontinentals.

Yes,looking at cab side there looks like a name in large italics like Dents.RAH transporters from Darlington had similar I think. It does have a beacon on top of cab so could possibly run long loads.

This isn’t one of Dents motors. Dents Transconti’s were registered OPT900T, RHN—X and PAJ270X and were the latter types with the blue ford oval/black grille. OPT was originally painted ford factory yellow with three shades of red stripes on the sides and RHN and PAJ were ford white with three shades of blue stripes on the sides. All had plain “Dents” stickers on the doors and the front panel above the grille. One was originally plain red but was recabbed after rolling over (RHN I think) but was re-cabbed with a ford white cab with the three blue stripes. See the Dents of Spennymoor forum for photos of OPT and PAJ.

Re Leyland Cruiser, we bought one second hand, X reg, from one of the fuel companies and had it stretched to take a flat body and hiab. It was for a contract job we had with Briggs Amasco ( Tarmac ) supplying their roofing jobs with materials from their NE depot. Also had to tow cooking asphalt mixers to site so the TL11 engine provided a bit more grunt.

It was a re-worked and lightly turbo-charged development of the Leyland O.680 engine. It was a reliable engine.
There had been an earlier turbo-charged development of the Leyland O.680 engine designated the Leyland 690. Not many of these were supplied in the UK and mainly they were used in the Leyland 2-pedal semi-automatic Beaver. The 690 engine wasn’t very reliable and was prone to overheating, suffering like other Leyland Group engines from the cooling limitations imposed by the Ergomatic cab.

“DEANB” Anyone drive a Leyland Cruiser ? :unamused: We have had a few on here.

Hi Dean, I had 3 Leylands with this cab, They were Leyland 50 series 14 ton GVW rigids with sleeper cabs.
The engines in them were a ■■■■■■■ of about 165 bhp, some called them a Baby ■■■■■■■■ They had 24ft
boxvan bodies with tail lifts, twin fuel tanks, and sleeper cabs, and were reliable and economical on fuel.
I also had a Leyland DAF 45 series similarly equipped that was 10 ton GVW, it weighed 6 tons empty, and
could only carry 4 tons, but it suited the job that we did for many years. This Leyland DAF 45 was ex Hotpoint.,
seen here on the A62 near Marsden, en route from Oldham to Huddersfield.

Cheers, Ray.

Thanks for the info and pic Ray. They were comfy motors chap.
