PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

windrush:
Well Dean, nothing in that edited report depresses me at all? The last paragraph summing up reads well enough in its favour. Foden was best overall on fuel, (as my gaffer used to say “It’s not the amount of work you do that worries me but how much it costs me for you to do it”) performance on hills would have been better if they had used ALL the twelve available gears in the 'box instead of just eight, it probably was the lightest as well. In twenty years time that Foden would still have been earning money (we had some that did longer than that) while the Swede would have long ago been recycled into a washing machine or similar!

Pete.

You tell him Pete !!

Yes Dean, one of Olloquiegui’s trailers I’d say, but with a subbie’s Volvo up front  .

Great article Dean regarding the Northwest Motorways being built back in the 1960’s.

Here’s a few more bits and pieces…

Rakewood Viaduct in 1968 during it’s construction.
The early completion of the 840 feet long viaduct was essential to enable the haulage of excavated rock for use in embankments further to the west.
Looking East the viaduct was built well before any of the hill beyond was carved away to make way for the carriageway which takes the M62 up to Junction 22 at Windy Hill.

M62 under construction in 1969 at the top of Windy Hill now Junction 22.

The path of the M62 in 1964 before construction began at Prestwich.

Same location at Prestwich in 1968 during construction after the old electric pylons had been demolished and realigned.

Junction 17 at Prestwich after the construction of the Manchester to Bury railway bridge.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The first Foden S83 tipper Tilcon had at our quarry that had Taperlite springs was TWB 37S, it actually came new with multileaf springs front and rear and I removed them all and fitted the new Taperlites before it went on the road. At least it was still clean to work on! They used to break very easily though.

Pete.

You spent an awful lot of time under those Fodens Pete !

windrush:
Chambers and Cook are still in business, we were staying at the Scotch Corner Travelodge a few weeks ago and an Eastern European lad came in wanting a bed. He was hauling a C & C tautliner with a plain white foreign unit, he struggled with the receptionists North East accent and she with his, and gave up and went elsewhere in the end!

Pete.

Nice to hear they are still going, have not seen one for a long time. They used to do alot of European work back in the 80’s.

Anyone recognise the Volvo ■■?

one of leggets na3t.org has a clear pic of this [emoji106]

Well spotted “mitch”

Piston broke:
GH Wintle were from near me. A really smart old established fleet. Those Seddon Atkinsons must have been very nearly the last British lorries they bought, I don’t remember them lasting long before being sold. After them they changed to Volvo and bought nothing else but until they closed the doors - early 2000’s I think. Very well known in the local area for their four little Bedford TK coal lorries, really tidy but really old ones, doing the old fashioned door to door sack deliveries. Regular return loads for the artics was coal back to the yard to be bagged for the TK’s to deliver out

Thanks Dean

Thanks for the info “Piston broke” good stuff. Cant blame them for getting rid of those Seddon Atkinson’s for Volvo’s.

Heres a few they operated.

Not had a Outen on before, anyone know anything about them ■■?

William C Hockin Volvo, from Devon or Cornwall.

Outen Transport (George Outen, I think) is from Essex - Basildon, if I remember rightly - used to load them home in the 90s. There’s an Outen Distribution listed at Companies House, dissolved in 2013 but founded only in 1997, so perhaps I remember an earlier incarnation.

Bill Hockin is from Barnstaple, and still very much in business

Thanks for the input Chris on Outen and Hockin’s.

Nice info on the m62, i recall seeing a documentary on the building of the m62 and the 1960s space age designers planned to put heating systems under the tarmac to prevent winter issues. Sadly the technology wasn’t invented (maybe still isn’t)

Thanks Dean for keeping this brilliant thread going, keep up the good work.

Bloody rotten lot you are . All those pics of the M62 making me feel decidedly ancient , I was carting tarmac to both locations . Windy Hill was not too bad , but across the top was freezing and wet , we dumped hundreds of tons when it had gone too cold to lay .
