Hi Dean, Rumgally Transport, from Cupar, Fife, the trailer Velux windows at Glenrothes, Fife. Les.
Hi Dean
Davies Transport were from a little place called Signet near Burford, right next to the main road. They had 5 or 6 lorries at most, from memory, all clean and tidy. They had 2 or 3 ERF artic bulkers, an ERF 8-wheeler (I think), a Foden 8-wheeler and the solitary Foden artic. They finished in the late nineties or early 2000’s I believe…
The little Scania is definitely part of the Duck squadron. Walsam Transport? All gone now I think
Great pics again They certainly encourage some memory and brain training!

They were connected with
the massive Codfish trade from Canada to the UK, and in particular to Poole. Vast amounts of Cod
were caught, spread out on enormous tables on the quayside to dry, then they were salted in order
to preserve them for their long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, no fridges in them daysThanks for the info Ray
We also had our own long distance fishing fleet working in the Grand Banks going back to the 1600’s and other areas from Greenland to the Barents Sea,up to the 1970’s with on board refrigeration being introduced from the 1920’s.Very brave crews doing that job.I still think to this day it’s sometimes possible for Irish and other European based ocean going trawlers at least sometimes to put into ports along the Canadian and North East American coast.
Those Dumpers have had some names through out the yrs ,Aveling Barford ,Aec ,Leyland and Scammell.

They were all AEC 690 Dumptruks from the model’s inception in 1961 to end of production. The only change in specification from beginning to end was replacing the AV690 engine with the AV760. There was also a 6x4 tractor unit version, model Leyland LD55 for exporting to third world countries. I did have a series of photos of LD55’s on forestry logging work in Africa the terrain was best described as “challenging”. Unfortunately i no longer have the photos. The AEC 690 Dumptuck was variously built at the former Maudslay plant at Alcester, Thornycroft Basingstoke, and Scammell Watford.

Scottish Land Development (SLD) was the appointed selling agent for all the AEC Dumptruk range of models. SLD became part of one of the major conglomerates. It might have been the Australian Brambles, I’ll have to look it up. I did have a test drive in a restored AEC 690 Dumptruk a few years ago, it was not sign written, but it was orange so it might have been this one.

Hi Dean ,always good to see Free Forresters , thier former depot inherited from Edwards Transport ,has been up for sale for several years now and still vacant ,regards Keith
pardon my intrusion keith, dont mean to be a anorak!!! but FREE FORESTERS were based in the old brs yard at micheldean (formaly GEORGE READS YARD, merrin end garage). EDWARDS yard in lydbrook was taken over by Nuttals, who in turn were bought by RENWICKS FREIGHT, then when they went bust, INGRAM FURNACE were there then BFI. it was used by various companys after then used by the BMW breakers FAB. yard has been owned by the jones family (rothdean) for years, and have planning for houses but want too much money for the land sorry to be a bore here endeth the history lesson!
Material Movements formerly Sibley’s are based at Nursling Ind Estate on the Western side of Southampton, Buzzer.
