Carryfast:
“DEANB” "Carryfast"UK spec 1978 3800 6v92 T ?.Before such a beast was officially listed by Bedford only 8v71 ?.A supposedly ‘mythical’ Tricentrol special order of the type that I knew of in the day finally appears ?.I forgot you had a bit of a fetish for the old Detroit V6 engine “Carryfast”
![]()
More specifically the 92 turbo series V 6 and V 8 which should have been put in the thing as standard from virtually day 1 totally by passing the 71 series.More or less a smoking gun proving the theory that the Brits were sabotaged to help the foreign importers. That T reg example should make anorak think again regarding previous arguments we’ve had on the subject elsewhere.
The 6v92 sounded and went much better than either the 6v71 or 8v71 and that one in photo was not only rare it would have been a flying machine in the day like some of the fire truck examples of it we built at the time.
Heres a bit more. 1982.

With the Bowker’s FL10 being an M reg - you’d have to say that the old 1 series Scania is looking good for it’s age.

"kevmorrow
Lewiss had a furniture warehouse at Moss Vale Road Urmston and had about 40 scammell automatic coupling trailers and about 10 scarabs. Mid 1960s I used to deliver Mothers Pride Bread to Lewis
s store Manchester about 6am. Lewis`s would have a couple of trailers parked up on the loading bays ready for the Urmston drivers to do changeovers. It was marvellous to see one driver Alec. On arrival without fail he would reach for his mug full of tea that was balancing somewhere on his dash, eat a sandwich while smoking his pipe that never left his mouth. This was while doing his changeover within Nano seconds, brew can at the ready and be away back to Urmston leaving a thick trail of smoke and spit after stocking up his pipe. I think he used to do this trip about 8 times a day job and finish.
Regards KEVHi Kev, I remember Lewis`s in Liverpool very well, I can recall my mother taking me there in 1955 to buy me a school blazer, having passed
the 11 Plus exam. The Liverpool store was rebuilt in the late 1940s and early 1950s, having been destroyed by the Luftwaffe in World War 2.
The bronze statue on the corner of the building was by Epstein, and shows a man stood on the bow of a ship, looking out to sea, but he hasn’t
any clothes on, he was soon nicknamed “Dickie Lewis” by the locals. Ray.
Good stuff Ray.

Hi Dean, MCD had a large open yard/depot right beside junction 12 of the M56, the Frodsham and Runcorn turn off.
I don’t know what their main source of work was, but they were very close to Ford Motor Co. at Halewood, and also
Vauxhall Motors at Ellesmere Port. We used to think that MCD stood for Merseyside Car Deliveries, but could be totally
wrong…I imagine that Oily might know. Whether MCD had depots elsewhere, I do not know. Regards, Ray.

Right Ray, not the only one to refer to them as Merseyside Car Deliveries but in fact proper name Mainland Car Deliveries, they had a car pound in an old quarry at Wheatley, Oxford for Cowley made cars, I had a good buddy Gerry Harris who worked for them driving a transporter similar to the one in Mark’s photo.

Hi, Kingswinford , I never saw any D and N Morgans working out of Mostyn Docks , there was a local firm , Morgan Freight , ran by a good friend of mine , Terry Morgan done a lot of work out of the dock , hope that will help you , Cheers Barry ,
MCD also had a depot at Queenborough on the Isle of Sheppey Kent which handled the Mazda contract.
I remember they had Guy Big J’s first then Leyland Buffalo’s before the Cruisers…I used to wash them down as part of my first job after leaving school. That would have been about 1984.

014On September the 9th 2010 the Cheshire firm of Autocarriers, which traded as MCD (Mainland Car Deliveries} entered administration.
It was the second time MCD had entered administration in less than a year as in the previous November MCD had been sold by administrator BDO in a pre-pack administration deal to Autocarriers its sister company.
At the time MCD had an O-licence for 150 vehicles along with 150 trailers.
On the 1st of October 2010 Northampton-based car transporter Autologic acquired a large proportion of the business for £500,000.
Good stuff Paul and thanks for the pics. They were a large concern then running 150 motors.

The Volvo F7 could well be a Tankfreight wagon as it looks like a “WU” West Riding reg plate.I think Wyatts from Leeds ran F7s as well so could be one of theirs.
