POD Robinson and Mick Cook took some photos in A E Evans’ Sheffield depot early 70s. POD sadly died a few months ago but his brother gave me permission to post his and Mick’s photos.

Mark R:
The Mair Volvo F88 is an ex Reed Transport motor…TKL 868N was part of an order for several F88’s which were quite unusual as they were day cabs.

…Mair transport had a base at Tilbury docks in the mid eighties…my dad drove a day cabbed f88 for Essex haulage based in pitsea Essex and I believe it was originally a petrol tanker on shell…the reg was SMU330N…that latter got re cab with a sleeper.

I’m fairly sure this could be the wagon my dad drove from new! I can see the headboard has signs of old lettering being removed but can’t make it out? I was only 11 at the time but even the reg number looks familiar or maybe I’m just getting carried away! Would be awesome if it was

Ronnie 63 jimmy Alford has been long retired but think he still owns his yard in Nursling just outside town but rents it out, cheers Buzzer.

Seeing that picture of this Shanahans stepframe brought back memories as one day on me way home through the Blanc one of there drivers asked me if I was going through the pipe but I said not for half an hour, anyways when I got to Cluses I saw him again he had followed someone else down the mountain with his step frame tilt and the reason he wanted me in front was he never had a break shoe left on his trailer and I was going to be his safety net, he had 22 ton of steel plate on the floor and topped right up with shoes and that was when we were supposed to be 32 ton gross, Cheers Buzzer.

For a small country/economy Shanahans was a big oul operation.
Ted Shanahan died a few years back in Spain. He had also taken on the big shipping boys, and had leased/chartered/rented whatever,a freight ferry, which sailed from Birkenhead to south Bank Quay in Dublin.
