Dean the coopers yard picture has some memories for me ,my first being in my Dads Defender loading the same bales in the same position to go to Stanton iron works possibly around 1980 ,my Dad loaded there everyday for some 30 plus yrs ,I’ve even loaded there my self in his Erf when I first passed my test

Hi Dan,
It looks like Tony Chubb loading those bales, cannot see if the weighbridge had been moved from middle of yard to just inside the gate.
Can you remove the electric static crane? It would be just to the left of the Sed AK.
I must have tipped over 3,000 loads in that yard!
Cheers Pete

Morning Dean,
You wanted pictures, they ain’t pretty and you will put me in the bad books with the ERF men!
Photo’s took on the bottom yard at Smethwick after they had moved the 1218 baler from the top yard, the ERF used to run over the road to the rail head on top yard, where the pic Dan has commented on, 34 ton to a rail truck and 28 trucks for a full train load, that was for Aldewarke Rotherham or 90 ton per rail truck and 12 or 13 trucks to a train load and that was tin can bales or baled incinerator scrap for Port Talbot.
She lasted 2 years doing this and finally the back spring broke 2 leaves and shoved the engine through the rad and had the knife and replaced by an EC and that also had the knife when I finished in there. The E series ERF was previously owned by Ely transport Cardiff and then by Griffiths’s down past Crossgates mid Wales, a lot of useless info there for you lads, apologies Pete!

C & W Farmers ERF bulker.

Hi Dean, The C & W Farmers ERF is “■■■■■■■■■■ & Westmorland”, the land of Dennis Smith, now called ■■■■■■■■ Regards, Ray.

Well spotted Ray. So that would have been changed to ■■■■■■■ sometime in the 70s ?
I wonder why they changed it to ■■■■■■■ ■■? :unamused:

Evening Dean,
Slightly off topic but to show Tidderson Alyesbury brs depot sign with the clearfreight logo. These photos would have been taken about 1983.
The idea was to match empty running with loads even for private hauliers.A few years later when Exel Logistics was created they actually competed for
work against BRS although all went to the same balance sheet [NFC]they were has much a threat as TDG or Salvesen,s. for contracts.Seems crazy i know.
Dai

Thanks for the comments Dai.

scania81:
The photos of the sign are not that good but you can make out Clearfreight.

Hi Dean, I think it was 1974 when large areas of the UK underwent massive boundary changes.
For example…Warrington, Lancashire became Cheshire
St Helens, Lancashire became Merseyside
Stockport, Cheshire became Greater Manchester
Carlisle, ■■■■■■■■■■ became ■■■■■■■
Kendal, Westmorland became ■■■■■■■

The above are just a few of the changes up here in the North. Some Counties disappeared altogether,
Shropshire became Salop, after 1974, Rutland no longer existed, Bristol, Gloucestershire became Avon.

Lots of people ignored the new area names and continued with what they were used to. Here in Wigan,
Lancashire, I believe it was debatable in 1974 whether Wigan became Merseyside or Greater Manchester,
and we ended up as Greater Manchester, as for me, it is still Lancashire. Regards, Ray Smyth.

Hi David, Thank you for your comments…Yes, Rutland is still a fine county, but further to my rant concerning the
very often stupidity of idiots in government, apparently from 1974 until 1997, Oakham, the “County Town of Rutland”
became part of “The Non Metropolitan County Of Leicestershire”. Kind Regards, Ray.

Morning Dean,
Thompsons of Crowle near Scunthorpe and an AEC Mandator of theirs, I previously posted on the AEC thread,
I did a fair few loads for Thompsons in the late 90’s, nice people to deal with and payment smack on time but sadly no more, consigned to history through mergers and a buy out, Cheer’s Pete

Is that a original sleeper cab mate? Can’t remember having seen one before…?

Some were so-called ‘Jennings’ conversions carried out by ERF. There’s a whole thread on it! Here’s the link:
