Hi Dean,
Love the shot of the Ductile F86,They had a steel stockholding plant on Planetry road Willenhall .A regular drop at Joint Motorways back then…

they had a few plants dotted around the black country.they just finished flattening the cold mill in willenhall opposite the fire station

Many a time waiting to tip up there they weren’t the quickest used to tip in all the plants up there ,seren steel tydlesey,European steel Doris rd ,run by the Birmingham mafia ,lye Stourbridge, brierley hill, to name a few ,tubes of warley,

Morning Dean ,another photo of a day cab for you and a converted jennings sleeper that at the time was driven by Nick Ironside.
Not my opinion or thoughts but sleepers in the 70,s were not popular and unions etc were not for them.
As a young cab rat i have seen beds in workshops and scania 110,s with the sleepers meshed out.

Morning Dai, Dean,
Arround 1976 an F86 with York Big D 5th wheel and a little paint would be just under £5,000 F88 sleeper (standard) about £8,000 less about £800 for the day cab.
But, In about 4 years time, the day cab model would be worth far less than the £800 saving because so fewer people would wont it.
Over the years I sold many a sleeper cabed unit to companies who did not need the sleeper but Needed the high residual when it was time to get rid.
Many years ago I had a demonstrator (fleet seed) in a large car transporter company and recieved a call one day to say it had broken down, quite near to me.
When I found it, it was on a housing estate ( later found to be outside drivers house) and the wiring under the dash had been just pulled out, bl**dy birds nest.
Sparks was out in about 2 hours while I shot 8 miles to the company to see the boss (didnt tell him about the birds nest) said when it done I will get it back to you.
Dont tell anyone I ageed to that ok, so off I go.
Sparks gone I put my car on and return to the yard,
Met by very angry men inside, its late friday just doing you lads a favor type thing bringing it back.
That unit and thier trailer was blacked and stood for 6 weeks in the middle of the yard because I was not in the union.
People ask what happened to this country ■■? Harvey

Harvey that is insane, you helped one of their own out who was clearly on a dodgy at home and they still went all militant over it. There’s a word I like to use to describe such people, it rhymes with bankers.

Oh and that’s an AEC Marshall, the give away are the AEC wings either side of the BL plughole badge, the Leyland version, the Retriever was a very rare beast, I can’t ever recall seeing one in the flesh.

The Welsh Seddon Atki looks to be in factory primer, they obviously needed a lorry in a hurry and didn’t have time to give it a lick of paint.

Chris you may recognise this company. East Lancs Chemicals ERF.

D & A Haworth Volvo F10.

East Lancs Chemical is a new one on me, Dean

D & A Haworth (David & Alice) are (or were) farmers/hauliers based in Heskin, near Chorley. They ran three Volvo F12s on traction for Bowker in the mid to late 80s, whilst David’s brother, Jim, ran a B Series on the same work

DEANB:
Mercer Volvo F10.

A02508 (1).JPG

Without the benefit of my files to hand, I’m pretty sure that this was new to W. H. Bowker.

Mercer was a name that came and went in Blackburn road haulage circles more than once in the late 1970s and early 80s - I believe there were legal issues…

Re the Heanor Green motor, com’on lads down to speck-savers it’s say’s Blackwood Hodge on the door, as someone said, agents for Euclid.

The Guy with Carrimore trideck is a J Harding and Son wagon, the one loading containers also looks like a Harding motor, lots of Howard Tenens working Cowley/Swindon etc at that time, far as I remember no connection with Hardings or car transporters .
Oily

This looks like a Clear Freight lorry. I hope some one can tell us about them. I know they were in the South East and ■■■■■■■ with BRS but don’t know how or when. The fleet no. is BRS but not sure where XF depot was.

Harvey, so the F88 would have been around £13,000 less £800.00 if you wanted a day cab. I understand what
you are saying about having a sleeper even if you dont need one as its easier to sell and will hold its price better.
Intresting story about the birds nest ! :open_mouth: :unamused:

I know clearfreight was set up for hauliers to backload like the one,s advertised on the back of the headlight magazine.
It was a Southern Brs idea and 1 was Aylesbury and Guildford on which the above foden was based.[AK]
The merc i would like to know where it was based but if any help XT was Brentford depot mars contract.
