Lowe of Paddock Wood ERF 6x4 E16 with Gardner 6LYT acquired by Turners in August 1996 when they bought Lowe’s transport division. There were two of these and IIRC they had Eaton twin-splitter gearboxes. We didn’t keep them for any length of time at Turners.
0My Dad was mad about those 16 litre things ,we used to meet a bloke from up Oldham way drove a liquid tank for I think nexus ,the Erf E16 was green with the juggling balls logo ? Tom I think his name was ,It sheared a fare few spigot shafts , I’ve never met anyone including Gardner fans with a good word to say about the lyt ,can’t see them being that good a match for twin splitter as they don’t exactly shut down quick ,however I do like to see and hear them on the show scene .
Thanks for your comments Dan.

Hi Dan,A mate from the Forest Of Dean on the truck show circuit,Adrian Reed owns this Foden.Has an LY 16 litre Gardner fitted.A coach driver friend of mine drove an LY powered Neoplan for Rapide.Thats all I can say tbh,Sorry I am not the biggest Gardner fan.Though I did admire the longevity of some of their engines.Regards Andrew.
Nice pic Andrew.

hi Dean great pics again,re day cab Volvos Ye they were quite rare here’s a couple I drove at BSC Rotherham Bulmers cider also ran them out of Hereford, the sleeper cab model couldn’t couple legally to our 40foot trailers but I suspect most operators disregarded that, cheer Alan
Alan’s post about Bulmers got the old memory going as i posted an article about them back on page 122 !
I knew i had some other stuff on them and here it is. A bit from Volvo’s IROLL magazine that they used to
send out in the 1970’s/80’s.
Bulmers certainly worked there Volvo’s hard working on average 22 hours out of every 24 !

Hi Dean, I think the Harrison lorry is from Tarleton, near Preston, Lancashire, Paul will know for sure. Regards, Ray.
I have had another look at the Harrison lorry, and it shows “Blackpool” on the trailer…I will go to Specsavers tomorrow.
Perhaps they did have a depot at Tarleton. Ray.

Driver is Harry Glover based at Ballidon quarry near Ashbourne. His brother David ran Glover’s coaches in Ashbourne. A steady driver, very rare we had anything major to attend to on his trucks (apart from the usual Gardner engine issues!) and he could get a few years out of a set of brake linings. His previous tank was a Foden S39, TRA 243K and his last one a Y reg Haulmaster with a ■■■■■■■ 250 and one of two fitted with a sleeper cab although Harry didn’t night out. Phillip ‘Hovis’ Brown drove it after Harry retired. Can I use the pic on the Ballidon Quarry Facebook page please Dean?

Hi Paul, one of ridings motors looking a bit sorrySeddon Atkinson 401 Series 4x2 tractor unit Reg No C50 OBV Fleet No 72 ‘Vulcan’ was powered by a Gardner 6LYT 16 litre 320 engine.
Registered new on the 1st of June 1986 at a cost of £27,468 plus vat it was driven from new by Alan Bretherton.
The picture above shows it at Longridge after being recovered following an accident coming out of Edinburgh when it went off the road into a ditch.
The damage included a badly bent chassis resulting in the vehicle being totally written off and scrapped.
Fortunately the Gardner 6LYT 320 engine was saved and later transferred into Seddon Atkinson 401 Series tractor unit Reg No D400 SRN.How did the 320 Gardners perform in the Riding fleet were they well regarded ?

I would think the 6x4 configuration coupled to a 16 litre engine would make them quite heavy and the mpg would be down too with that set up Graham
