Hi Dean you said any one remember Rowe group well I do as in the early 70’s I took and past my HGV test in Cornwall and IIRC Rowe’s were land owners & farmers growing a variety of vegetables which needed transportation to the markets further North so they started there own haulage company plus hauling for others, they also I believe had a distribution chain in Cornwall for fruit which was a return load in many cases, I may be wrong but some one on here will know for sure. During that time I hauled a lot of cauliflowers and new spuds to the markets in Bristol Birmingham and Cardiff with reloads out of Avonmouth with animal feed for Cornwall farmers, running the gauntlet over Bodmin Moore on two log books most of the time, Mary Hopkins moments there, Cheers Buzzer.

HI Buzzer, looking back on this thread at the picture of the ROWE GROUP vehicle you posted ,reminded me of a Cornish engineering Company that produced haulage trucks and remember them being tested around Cornwall,is this the same Company i’m thinking of-- toshboy

Southworth ERF

F Southworth Limited of Rawlinson Lane, Heath Charnock, near Chorley - they had at least four iterations!

It was owned by the Drinkwater family and used to do quite a bit for Courtaulds, as I recall, baled fibre. Anyway, the business went down the first time and was reborn as Drinkwater, in the same colours. When that failed, they became Southworth Chassis Engineering (rigids into tractors and vice versa, third axles, that sort of stuff), and then that failed, only to re-emerge as Drinkwater Chassis Engineering or similar. After that sank, I never heard of them again!

Taken over by N L Walling at Brought near Preston my old boss

Chris Drinkwater owed a neighbour of mine money from the Courtauld days, and he never forgot it. When the Southworth Engineering charade came into being, my neighbour got his F12 in there and a tag axle was added - debt suitably settled…

The “other” Rowe produced the Hillmaster range of lorries, looked a bit like forward control Austins of that time. Apparently they were a decent vehicle and the marque may have survived, even flourished if it had a sales team! There are plenty of photos around so I dare say someone will be able to post one or two.

I`m sure the vehicle depicted in the Scania advert is of McKelvie Paisley Reg. number HXS 523H. The TDG experimented with this alternative livery, before going back to a more traditional livery.

And here’s a Rowe Hillmaster. I understand that the company built around 120 of these, plus a handful of buses.

Hi Dean,
Some time back I said a trailer in one of Pauls shots looked like a “Hopitality Trailer” to which you replied… Pictures !!!
New I had one somewhere so found it. This is said trailer as I droped it back to Princes in Millbrook road after picking it up at the manufacturers in Bournemouth.
The second shot will have to go on another post as I have yet to master the art of puting two shots on one post, Harvey

timeless…it appears!

When Volvo released the Volvo F10/12 range they really did lift the bar on trucks. Even if you are not a
Volvo fan there is no denying the huge improvement’s to trucks generally that Volvo have always brought
to the industry. They were pure class and like a rolls royce back in 1977 when these were unveiled to the
world !
