If you look closely at the nearside rear mudguard of the Mandator you will see that it is damaged. Here is a closeup view.

Brighton Incident.jpg

And here is the vehicle that caused the damage…

sent.jpg

It happened at the end of the London to Brighton run and I was waiting to leave and return home. I was parked opposite the Sentinel with my offside wheels up against the pavement kerb, a good job they were as it turned out. I was leaning out of the door window talking to Peter Seaward and suddenly I felt the Mandator move sideways a few inches and there was a loud screeching noise. I wondered what was happening and a glance in the nearside mirror showed that the Sentinel was pushing against my back wheels and the side of the trailer. The screeching sound was the steamer’s rear wheels spinning round, but because my offside wheels were against the kerb, he couldn’t push me any further. Next stop after the pavement was a wall and the beach! What had happened was that the Sentinel “had got away from its driver” and it was basically out of control. The Mandator and trailer got away lightly compared with the Sentinel. It’s front curved panel was badly damaged. I must be one of the few people still alive who can truthfully say that they’ve been in a collision with a steam waggon! The car park photograph was taken one week after the London to Brighton run on Ted Hannon’s event,

Hi Punchy Dan, Just what i was thinking, very strong build.
Like Deanb, i thought Wilcox but dont remember them using so many vertical ribs, but could be a special build, Mark Rouse retired many years ago, shame he is not on this forum.

What a cracking picture Paul thanks for passing it on to Dean to post on here.

ERF LV 64CU 4X2 tractor unit Reg No JTU 951L was originally registered new in 1972 to Priestner Transport Ltd of Carrington
and was purchased second hand by James Nuttall.

JTU 951L is pictured here in 1977 when six years old in James Nuttall livery parked in their old yard on Victor Street in Hollinwood Oldham.

Fleet shot, taken in 1981 at James Nuttall’s old depot on Victor Street in Hollinwood near Oldham, shows how the fleet at that time consisted of British built vehicles such as Foden, ERF, Seddon Atkinson and even an Atkinson Borderer which can be seen tucked in at the end of the line up.

A publicity shot taken in 1984 in the garage of James Nuttall (Transport) Ltd after they moved from Oldham to Rochdale.
The ‘C’ Series ERF 4x2 tractor unit on the left is in fact Reg No A51 LBA when new, which was one of a batch of ■■■■■■■ powered C32 ERF’s introduced into the fleet in April 1984.
The number plate of A51 LBA was airbrushed out so as the publicity photograph would not be outdated quickly.
To the right is a Seddon Atkinson 400 Series 4x2 tractor unit and a ‘B’ Series ERF 4x2 tractor unit both in for service.

JN36-001.jpgIn 1989 James Nuttalls fleet consisted mainly of ERF 4x2 tractor units.
In this picture we see five ■■■■■■■ powered ERF ‘E’ Series along with nine ERF ‘C’ Series tractor units lined up in the depot at Castleton near Rochdale.
Again this was a company publicity shot, hence the number plates being air brushed out so as not to date the picture.

Originally registered new to Bannerman.s Transport of Tain on the 24th of March 1989 Reg No F490 UJS was the last ERF E14 4X2 tractor unit operated by James Nuttall Transport Ltd.
Pictured here parked in the depot at Rochdale in October 2009 it was being used as the garage/yard shunter.

Taken on a Saturday afternoon in November 2009 this depot shot shows a near all James Nuttall Scania tractor line up except
for a solitary DAF XF which has long since gone.

Last new Foden I had was fitted with a Wilcox body, all panelled over though so don’t know how many ribs it had but the panels rattled well when going over rough ground. :open_mouth: Seemed a decent body apart from the taildoor and Dawbarn rollover sheet, blooming hard work they both were! :unamused:

Pete.

Is it my eyes or is that a long wheelbase for F reg ?

I don’t think there were any rivets in them Dan, it was some kind of flexible mastic. They firmed up with hot tarmac in the body but loosened again when cold.
