Richard Procter ERF. Is it me or does that load of wood look a bit iffy ■■

If I remember correctly, Richard Procter was a Liverpool haulier, and worked out of Pilkington Glass in St Helens

That’s right Chris - painted green with yellow chassis; very distinctive. The yard was on the corner of Strand Road & Irlam Road in Bootle, which was latterly occupied by a certain D O’Brien’s tipper outfit. Procters were just about finishing when I first started passing on a daily basis in 1989. By the time my daily commute past there ceased in 1996, O’Briens were just about finishing too. Incidentally, Jack Puddifer’s scrapyard was diagonally opposite and there were certainly plenty of relics from famous Liverpool fleets hanging around in there…

Lance Biscomb:
Wonder if they were NEW F88 cabs fitted and how much they cost :astonished: Or second hand refurbished :astonished:

Hi lance,
Heanor built their first HHT in the mid 1970’s.As a kid I used to see them fairly regularly. They were then and still are to me an almost perfect heavy haulage truck.SAL 513R has been sold for preservation.GCS Johnson converted SAL to a V8 SCANIA.Dean, that photo of Transcontinental haulage’s F89 brings back fond memories of seeing that fleet coming through South Wales almost daily.Thanks.
Regards Andrew.

Marglass or Marclass MAN

The joke of ropes not chains to hold steel. It seems to have been a common ( bad ) habit among many of the old school guvnors and after numerous arguments one of the reasons why I walked away from general haulage in the day.

Hi, Folks , Could the Scania wma 887 m , be an ex willams bros Wales ? Cheers Barry

ye it’s a roadtrain from British Leyland own fleet,I had this one on demo WFR 136V similar reg

Radford’s Scania bulker.

F.T.Collier & Son Maggie bulker.

Taylors Draycott Crusader, looks like a couple of BRS ERF’s on trailer.

Leyland. Roadtrain ? I assume its a roadtrain but the cab look a bit low to me. Trying to remember i
think they made one a bit smaller, was it a freighter ■■?

Mc Gills Tidy Atkinson.

I’m pretty sure the Taylor’s Crusader is Ex Shaws Fuels (Sykes Group) it would have 220 Rolls engine.

Why not come clean “CF” you couldn’t “cut it” on general haulage and probably got “the bullet” ! Anyway I guess you’ll be out and about to-night frightening the local populace because I believe Matron hasn’t given you your Meds so you can just act “normally” about the streets of Leatherhead to-night       The blokes in “White Coats” will find you at mid-night and return you to your cell , sorry, secure accommodation, and Matron will strap you into your “jacket” for the night !      Only "trick or treat you’ll get my son will probably be a punch up the “froat” or a boot up the arse I guess, anyway happy hallowee’n “CF” and don’t scare the kids too much ! Cheers Bewick.

No got told once too often to do mission impossible of running up to the Midlands to do a load of multiple collections then back to London to multi drop it all then back to the yard in a shift and to stop booking ‘unnecessary’ nights out.Or wanting me to do other jobs involving a day’s work done in an afternoon.Added to holding bleedin great loads of metal on a flat with bits of string. Then the zb actually had the nerve to phone me and ask me to go back. :imp:

As for frightening the locals even if I could be bothered it’s way too early for Halloween yet.Although some say that you’re a strange lot up there and I was always a bit scared going north of Watford after watching that film the Wicker man.Which I thought was actually an undercover documentary which went wrong. So don’t judge us all by your own heathen standards. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

Having said looking at it again the example in the photo looks like he might at least have been given some of those new fangled strap things but just not enough of them.

Intresting point Lance, the 88 cab was well know rotting out at the bottom of the doors so if you were
going to all that trouble you would certainly want to fit either refurbished like you say or new !

I agree Andrew about the Irish trucks, they run some of the smartest looking fleets on the road in my
opinion in the 70s & 80s. Unfortunately alot of the fridge companies have now gone !

Scania tanker. Any ideas Chris ■■

No,that’s a new one on me,the red and blue type livery on that TIR tank is familiar but I can’t place it,unless it was Norco? I can’t make the reg plate out either.
There were one or two tanker men ran green sleeper Scanias out of Albright and Wilsons at Whitehaven int 70s.Somebody else might know…

To look on the bright side.I only ended up taking that job because it was all I could get having been laid off from my night trunking job which I’d started a few months previous.Owing to making way for a long serving driver at another depot who was prepared to move when his depot was closed down. The guvnor said that he’d get me back as soon as a vacancy arose and luckily he was true to his word and just at the right time when I decided that I’d had finally had enough of it and walked away.Having said that to be fair I never liked doing general flat work,as opposed to plant, anyway, especially short runs involving lots of drops and collections expected to be done in a shift and all that was probably just the final straw and I probably would have ditched it anyway.

But yes rightly or wrongly I’ve been a bit ■■■■■■ off about the ‘opportunities’ situation in the industry. In which the jobs I liked and felt suited to unfortunately, but probably not surprisingly, seemed to be in short supply and the ones that every one else liked and the way in which those seemed to be easier to get onto for some than for others.

But I’d still happily go back and do it all again. On the basis that overall my first job was very interesting and I was lucky to be able to work in that unusual sector of specialist vehicle testing and own account transport. The council job wasn’t that bad with hindsight and the upsides of night trunking,as it was in my case, outweighed the downsides and certainly better than many of the alternatives.

Yes,they were based at Lime Street Hull and taken over by Calor eventually.Nice fleet, some in Oribis livery, some in Doverstrand.
They were formerly known as Easthaugh Brothers. Here’s a photo, not mine,of an A E Evans sliding door AEC MK3,ex Shell, at their yard, steaming tank out,and you can just make out the Easthaugh name on the back of their tanker.Photo was taken in 1968 and a year later I drove the Mammoth Major for a week when I first started…

Thanks for the pics Steve, the tanker has the same colours on it as the one on the Scania so they belong
to the same company. Bit of an unusual colour scheme !
