When new it featured in some Seddon Atkinson publicity shots, Chris will have all the fine details.

This was one of a batch of seven 400 Series, the first on the Pandoro fleet, 227-233 inclusive, and all of which were based at Stoke Depot, I think for their entire lives in service. They were also the first new vehicles on the fleet to carry the new P&O corporate livery, although the headboard used the font of the original Pandoro livery and didn’t match the lettering on the doors.

They were fitted with 250 ■■■■■■■ and 9-speed Fuller.

Hello DEAN ,and some lovely pictures on this site ,this Atkinson was new to Trevor Morris Oswestry ,it has a Montgomery reg ,as Trevors family was from Llanfechain ,thank you Trevor .

Would appear to be a Riding sleeper conversion, though

Now there’s a question for Paul, next time you see Tom: how many sleeper conversions did W&J carry out for other operators??

I believe that the Pandoro Venturer, LCK 480N, was the last one carried out: I well remember collecting it one Sunday afternoon from Longridge, late in 1981.

0That’s a Foden S80 operated by mail-order catalogue company Kay & Co Ltd, otherwise known as Kays.
The company had offices and warehouses in Worcester, Leeds, Glasgow, Newtown, Bradford, Bristol, Droitwich, Lancaster and York.
On the 23rd of February 2007 Kays original depot in Worcester closed as part of the work to amalgamate Kays and Littlewoods under the new brand name ‘Shop Direct’.

I can remember Kays catalogue company as my mum had one of there catalogues ! How did you know that
was there motor Paul, just the colour scheme ■■

Lancaster and Kelly were Isle of Man hauliers at one time, then I think they went into household removals with a yard in either Glen Vine or Crosby. I’ve not seen them around for ages though. Not my photo…

Thanks for confirming Chris, nice pic chap !

Eastern roadways Scania. Are they part of the P & O Group ■■?

Yes they were - see last week’s essay on P&O

Eastern Roadways International was based in Ruskington and seemed to be more about heavy haulage than anything else. In my bit of P&O (Pandoro) we didn’t have anything to do with them operationally.

 :unamused:   Forgot about that Chris !

Hello Pete, Thanks for the info on the Carvers tanker. It looks like it was pretty tired in that pic so would imagine
it was being used for storage like you said. Here’s another pic of it.

Great Universal acquired Kay & Company Ltd in 1937 and continued to run the Kays catalogue as a separate title within the GUS holding company.
Below is a shot of one of Kays Worcester based Leyland Mastiff’s hauling a Great Universal trailer.
GUS was swallowed up by Littlewoods in 2004 and today it is now known as Shop Direct with most of their mail order distribution carried out by Yodel.

By the way Dean this thread has just passed 100,000 views a credit to you, Paul and Mark.

Hey DEAN ,thanx for the Owens Borderer ! ,they had about 10 of them working 24/7 between Llanelli radiators and Longbridge ,they were mostly second hand from Metal Box Aintree and a few from Morfa transport . A couple ended up as shunters . Great shots of the Mordov Atki ,and Ellis Morgan TM ,regards Keith .

A01625.JPGW.D. & H.O. Wills was one was one of the founding companies of Imperial Tobacco.
From 1960 Imperial developed a strategy aimed towards diversification and away from its focus on tobacco.
This saw a move towards the food, drink and leisure industries and began in earnest with the acquisition of Golden Wonder.
In 1967 the company made bought the HP Sauce Group with its many subsidiaries, including Lea & Perrins.
This was followed by the National Canning Company (Smedley’s), taking Imperial into frozen foods and further into tinned foods.
A huge addition came in 1969 with the Ross Group at which time Imperial then changed its name to Imperial Tobacco Group Limited.
After that between 1986 and 1996 came the Hanson years during which time most of the group was sold off and split up.

Another member of the Imperial Tobacco Group was and still is John Player & Sons.

moomooland:

I know the Mercury wasn’t the biggest unit & that trailers would bulk out before reaching max weight, but even at that , it looks to be a fairly tall trailer for its day :open_mouth:
