What are the castings on the back of the J Thomas 88 please?

:unamused:

syramax:
theyre ingot moulds (steel making) , not sure how they were used but the faces used to wear /suffer damage . they were welded and re-machined . I used to do the machining on a planning machine with a milling head attached late 70s early 80s if my memory is correct.

1The Field packaging business was established in 1850 in Bradford under the Firth & Field name.
In 1999 the Field Group was bought out by Chesapeake and in January 2008 the Field name disappeared from the packaging industry altogether after Chesapeake applied its own brand name to all its operations.
0With the Field brand now long gone here is one of Chesapeake’ artic’s today. Harry’s On The Road Truck Photos

Fields were a good firm to work for inside and driving , they paid well part of it is a pile of bricks now , they ran AECs before the ERFs then went on to Mercs

Thanks for your comment “ramone”

Thank You.

Many Thanks for posting the Bowker Bros picture, it’s one I’ve not seen before…
My Grandfather founded Bowker Brothers in 1926.

Also Thanks to Pete Smith for the heads up

In the Cullimore article the Foden salesman in the pic, Arthur Hassle, lived in Ashbourne and later became a dumper driver at Ballidon quarry in Derbyshire. A keep fit enthusiast, he used to run around the quarry at lunchtime, he was sadly killed while riding his bike in the Stoke area after an accident with a bus.

Pete.

A00005.JPGThis Foden S21 Spaceship Sputnik 6x4 heavy haulage tractive unit was registered new on the 16th of June 1967 to Shellabear Price Plant of Bentley Lane Walsall.
Powered by a ■■■■■■■ NH220 engine it was saved for preservation and fully restored at Chris Bennett’s yard in Bredbury Stockport.
Pictured below in all it’s splendor it can now be seen today at various rallies across the country.

Shellabear Price Plant had a fleet of motor scrapers, like the one above, along with a substantial fleet of Caterpillar bulldozers.

I have been kindly sent some lovely old photos from a friend who has been taking photos of trucks for years.

Some are black and white as well as colour. I think people will enjoy these as there are loads of
old companies that are long gone, and companies you totally forgot about.

The pictures were taken at different locations,so people may recognise some landmarks.

The other intresting thing is that apart from about 5 he put on facebook ,no one has seen
any of these pictures as they have never been online anywhere.

Harold Wood ERF tanker, must have been a fair size company as we have had a fair few of his ?

Harold Wood…an absolute giant of tanker haulage, started as an owner driver in the early 1930s and built up to about 700 tankers by 1970 when he sold out to UTT I think it was, (but needs verifying). In its day Harold Wood was the largest privately owned tanker haulier in the country and was a massive AEC user, even owning AEC dealerships. They carried every type of bulk liquids you can name. A legend of tanker operations and innovation. The ERF dates from when the company had been sold by Harold Wood.

Hi Gingerfold HW became TF when Cali Bulk PTH an HW merged to become TF, in around 1961/2 he had over 400 Vehicles/tkrs then, The Man Himself

For all those suffering from stiff necks here it is the right way up

Here’s a few busy street scenes for everyone to mull over on a Sunday afternoon…

PC17.jpg

The bottom picture was taken in Reading in 1945.
The Fordson 7v in the foreground was operated by Joseph Eva Ltd who went into liquidation in 1952.
The Fordson forward-control 7V range made its debut in 1937 and was powered by a 30hp sidevalve V8 engine.
The distinctive cab for some reason featured a sunroof over the passenger seat, which can be seen the photograph.
