Hello DEAN ,many thanks for the W G Davies Crusader …wondering if it is the Fenland Express ? …so names as its main work was hauling nickel pellets in drums from the Mond at Clydach to Goole and Boston docks for export …probably for Sweden …it was with a respected Leominster driver Dickie Darrell …
Mention of Ellis Morgan …my father says he can remember them at Economic drums Pontardawe …and Dunloppila at Hirwaun …awesome South wales memories DEAN …thanks again …Geraint .

This was the ERF I was sent from HLH at Norwhich “in lieu” of the one I thought I’d bought and paid for !
However, it’s drawback was the fact it only had a top speed of around 53 MPH which was absolutely no good for the double shifting work particularly down and back to Daventry every night. So we ran it in for a couple of balls aching weeks then I sent it into the ERF Middlewhich Service Centre for an FOC exchange higher geared diff. ERF’s duly carried out the change and I got dropped off by one of our motors to collect it myself  As I walked into the ERF yard I saw our motor coupled to their test trailer ! Aye aye what gives 'ere then ! So I checked in and one of the Foremen ( White coater) a little short arsed individual asked if I would have a run up the road to the M6 roundabout and back as they ERF were unsure whether “Bewicks” would be happy with the result ! ( I never let on that I was " Bewick"). So I gets in behind the wheel and this short arse gets in the passenger side and off we goes up the steady incline towards the M6 and I’m changing up through the Fuller box running at 32 ton gvw. So this Foreman is asking if Bewick’s Boss will be happy with this higher diff ratio as in his opinion whoever’s idea it was to have the diff changed has , in his opinion, ruined a good motor ! So I says it’s fine and I was impressed with it’s performance and this little wassock couldn’t understand it ! So I kept stumn until we got back to the centre and we went inside to sign to release the Motor and this little ■■■■ started again in the foyer telling the Service Manager his opinion. Well this Manager knew who I was and I could see him visibly wilting as this little ■■■■ kept running his mouth !! Finally the Manager says to him can I introduce you to Mr Smith Bewicks MD !!! The little ■■■■■ face drained white ! And I says yes I’m the idiot who decided to have the diff change !! So I think you had better shut up and I have decided the gearing is perfect for our operation which gave a top speed then of circa 63 mph ! He slid away stage left and the Manager offered his apologies  But there was no harm done as I thoroughly enjoyed the fun of it all ! And it turned out to be one of the finest motors we ever ran, perfect, and it gave us 100% service over the years we operated it until it ended it’s days as our yard shunter !! Cheers Dennis.

Gilbraith Tankers was taken over by Hargreaves, John

Yes Chris that’s right.
In May 2006 Hargreaves (Bulk Liquid Transport) Ltd acquired the business of Gilbraith Tankers Ltd for £2 million.
In November 2007 Hargreaves completed a £5 million deal to acquire Teesside-based Imperial Tankers.
In September 2014 Sutton Group acquired Imperial Tankers which by then was classed as the bulk chemical transport arm of Hargreaves,

Originally Imperial Tankers, who were based in Billingham, was formed in 1989 after a management buy out of what were ICI’s road tanker operations.
All rather confusing i know. :unamused:

Here are a few pictures, courtesy of the late Peter Davison, showing some new additions to the fleet shortly after the take over by Hargreaves in 2006.

I need to see the quack I think Paul, I forgot all about The Hargreaves Group in the equation who also bought Stiller (tanker division) for 6.3m in 2009 and added them to the group.

Saltend-001.jpgA mixed bag of tankers parked up awaiting loading at Saltend Hull.

Hiya Dean, The episode with the Diff at ERF Middlewich reminded me of another “difference of opinion” I had with them at a later date regarding Chapman Superide seats-----v---- UOP Bostrom seats in the first B Series unit we bought in '77 ! Cheers Dennis.

Spent some happy hours in Saltend in 1970 when working for A E Evans,no rushing about on that job.
Mind you,you couldn’t really rush with an AEC MK3 MM… :grimacing:
