Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

And many many knock-offs of sundry Volvos/ Mercs/ MANs.

I did exactly the same, Ramone ! Sad isn’t it !

@les_sylphides think of the knowledge and entertainment we’d have missed out on, if it wasn’t so.

Similarly harsh yet stunning landscapes?

I don’t understand the 25km-long queue of trucks with no cars and only one motorbike rider.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but have seen a few others about China and driving. It is very difficult for foreigners to get Chinese driving permits. No other types are recognised. And also very difficult to temporarily import a motor vehicle.
IDPs etc are not recognised by China.

Very few European trucks ever made it through, and then usually to the nearest depot for trans-shipping - I believe Ralph Davies did it once. Normal practice was to trans-ship at the border. Somewhere on here there is an excellent thread that covers all this. It might be the Khazakhstan thread or the Europe & Beyond thread. Furthest I ever got in that direction was Baku.

I did actually go to the border at the Khunjerab Pass at the top of the Karakoram Highway in northern Pakistan once. We were hugged by the Chinese border guards and exchanged cigarettes for hooch in tetrapacks - but I was a tourist, so not with a lorry. There were Chinese lorries a-go-go though-though!

It’s no use me me saying that “I don’t want to get into the politics” because all borders are, by definition, political (and usually arbitrary): nonetheless, I have no personal grudge with Russia or China (that’ll me make unpopular in certain circles), it’s the landscapes and the languages that fascinate me. One of these days, given a following wind…

Yes, the sun in your face and the wind in your back. Wanderlust never leaves you until you slake it.

I partly blame the film “Lawrence of Arabia” and B&W photos of my Dad’s from his time in Egypt and Palestine.

Hiya “ramone” with regard to Capris Fords started using the 2:8 injection engine in both the Capri and Granadas and we ran both. My Wife Anne had a 2:8 Capri in around 83/84 she also ran an Escort XR3 for a little while but unfortunately it didn’t have power steering so she used struggle a bit parking etc.I haven’t any shots of either of these cars but here’s one of the 2:8 Granada I ran for a while. And the second shot is the last 3:0 Granada that I paid a knock down price of £9000 for which replaced Annes XR3.

The shots have come up the wrong way round as the Silver one is the 2:8 Injection and the other one is the 3:0 engine !

I always liked the Granadas specially the 2.8 Ghia X even though i never owned one , you know what these hauliers are like with wages i could never afford anything for more than a £1000.My partner’s bought a Ford Puma Vignale last summer and for a 1.0 litre it’s suprisingly nippy.Back to the Granadas though and i think what came after the last version of the Granada never looked as executive. Were they called Scorpios or something similar?

I’ve got a 2020 XC90 T8 Inscription Pro for sale if anyones interested

Will you deliver?

That’s a shot of my Scorpio and also the back end of a Granada Coupe I ran for a while !

Yeah for a price.Remember , the steering wheels on the right side.Might be a bit too powerful for you at just under 390 bhp

DES 54, where are you?

390 hp? Is it electric? Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to use it all. As I’m sure you know, any idiot can push all the way to the floor the skill is in knowing when to stop pushing.

I didn’t only run poxy Fords back in the day “ramone” this 1980 Merc was a right beast it could spin the back wheels at 100mph ! It was an import direct from Germany but conformed to UK C & U. It was an entirely different spec to the ones that were sold through UK Dealers and it was a much better spec. This was the only Merc that needed a warranty job as within one month of getting it the water pump bearing needed replacing and I got a right interrogation off the Boss man at the dealer as to where I had got this car from as it wasn’t a UK Spec ! He was real pissed off but i told him to mind his own business and i wouldn’t divulge the channel I got it through !
