Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

I’ve heard it all before. The fact is I left the council with a clean safe record and a good reference.

The point is even incompetent public sector management knew that there was no point in speccing a 24t 6 wheeler rigid, let alone an artic, with an obsolete NA motor.

Les Edwards, I know him from later when he was an owner driver on EBT.

Yes. And I hadn’t forgotten Rhodesia / Zimbabwe, which is why I mentioned that ERF also covered much of southern Africa.

Enjoy the day!

A golden oldie ,pic taken in Hampshire 1961

If it was the best 5 years of your life why would you give that up?

:-1:
Hey GOM I’m beginning to worry about you.Time for a distraction from such wild ideas.

As in would/should have been the best 5 years of my working life were it not for the vagaries of the industry’s recruitment regime. So young single no ties lumbered with 7am to 5 pm local council work while older married with family whingeing and moaning about not getting home to see their familiesLike the vagaries of its spec v usage regime. So 220 Roller artics for transitting Europe and turbo 265 for 24t gritters trundling around the motorways of Surrey.

I get and expect no sympathy from the SDU’s of this world in that regard. But seems we might at least agree on the idea of putting a 1960’s tech tipper motor in a 1980 long haul artic.Nuts.

To fail as a transeuro driver.
As for owner driver…for the sake of two bob.

 Did you make “brummm brummm” noises too?

[sotto voce I did]

Were these steel or “plastic” cabs? The top of the cab looks similar to some of the Oz and UK Atkis.

AEC Mercury, a very fine lorry, they were always well on top of their job. 7.7 engine, 6 speed box, Happy days.

I’ll do a shift with the Mk V, and I would hope there will be a couple of pints at clocking off time.
And I wouldn’t mind having a go with the BRS Maudsley.
I have ‘a thing’ for the older motors, it’s an affliction, I can’t help it.
I loved the old bonneted Scammells with the gate change and a Gardner, a proper man’s machine.

Oh, me too, and no rush rush at 38 mph top speed. I used to tell people that once on the A1 northbound I could set the stick between the go faster pedal and the screw sticking out of the plate above it (now known as cruise control to all you youngsters) and sit in the passenger seat to get the left arm brown. Just an occasional correction reaching out to the steering wheel but no need to overtake, at that speed I never caught anyone up.

BTW, spotted an Atki Viewline further up on @ramone ‘s post. Fond memories of tiny steering wheel, power steering, almost flat floor and memories created much later with the first Magnum. But the giant screen, baking hot in summer, freezing in winter, but you can’t have everything. :joy:

Is that a shed load on the drag?

Its the start of the Trans Pennine Run apparently.I don’t know if it’s correct it’s what was stated under the photo but it usually starts at Birch Services which that doesn’t look like. Would that trailer be a Dyson?
