Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

In freezing temperatures, doing a knot is not good.

There wasn’t a part of the front of my hands where I couldn’t put a cigarette out on it!

Only soft ■■■■■■■■ and wimps used gloves back in the day and when this shot was taken a few years back I hadn’t used a rope for years ! But no way did I need gloves on that day and my hands were as soft as no doubt CF 's are ! :fu:

Mistake there thats the jag

That’s what you get when the recoil on the vacuum cleaner breaks.

Back in the day, gloves weren’t even a consideration, but now men have got smarter and gloves have got better.
Reading Carryfast’s comments, I seriously doubt he’s ever tarped a load.

Did he get the vacuum cleaner out to clean up all the rust?

I do hope you weren’t roping the gaps and not the load Dennis :grin:

That Henry could be the first photo of CF.Note the size of its nose :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

He’d need a wet and dry for what he’d be cleaning up SDU

I doubt he’s ever driven never mind rope and sheeted SDU .His wording is all wrong like it’s come out of a book

Mine cracked every winter for a few years after Moaster

Is that photo of Dennis Smith at a Lorry driver of the year competition ? I only went to one (as a spectator) but thought they’d added a sheeting & roping category..

He didn’t want to get his trophies wet, on the way back to Cumbria.
I have no doubt that if Dennis had entered he would have aquitted himself well.
That is an event worth entering. Anyone entering has already proved themselves a cut above, unlike a safe driving award, that are handed out to almost anyone who asks for one.

Looking at that photo it could have been one of Fast Eddies drivers looking that smart but i doubt it

@Bewick1 My father-in-law was national runner up to lorry driver of the year in 1962. He taught me a lot, but had difficulty addapting to a different way of doing things here. In essence, I had the best of both worlds, with a few extra tricks that many Aussie drivers had never been shown.

That Atki is superb … sheeting not bad either did CF do it for you
Was the net on the last photo like a sheet ie same dimensions .Did they wrap and roll up the same way or were they one piece.I’ve never used one. My dad carried bailed waste paper and when i went with him i was the one who had to go up top and roll the sheets out if that’s what you could call them.Very light but full of holes .They never used proper sheets because the boss got paid on weight

Ha ha like having long bars and short ropes instead of hooks and a couple of long 'uns then? Had such fun putting the locals right as to which was the best way.

However, back in Britain after presenting my drivers with demount bodies with curtains I had them built with ringbolts in the floor, very difficult to do a Pommie Dolly with those so they had to learn an Aussie hitch.

But they were hardly used, I just wanted the choice rather than have wagons standing if our own work dropped off. They had vertical bars for load retention (rolls of fabric) and curtains for weather protection.

Looking good Dennis on all counts , you & of course your handy work  :+1:
