Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

I looked at the third photo and thought “why’s that familiar?” and realised I took it.

If I’d known, I’d have credited you. All were randome pictures pulled from the double ewes.

Couple of loads for our friend CF Handball on and off!!

Please don’t set off CF off again, or mention hub transportation, A frame trailers, engine braking or we will all be on about it for a week.

A very handsome Mk V

I think the Marathon 2 came out 77/78.The improvements made a big difference but questions were asked as to why it took so long to implement them. The foot brake valve was relocated from the chassis to cab i think and the original heater was from the ergo cabs and couldn’t cope with the bigger cab. The dash and facia was updated , no big deal. Not sure why they persisted with the rear axle.Another thing they could have done was lower the cab a bit and fit it to the rest of the range and do away with the then dated ergo

Yes, TRUCK mag tested a Mk 2 in December '77 and were scathing about the poor Fuller 9-sp gearbox installation and its ‘lousy linkage’, even going as far to suggest that Leyland should go and look at how well other manufactures managed to install Fuller boxes.

The Marathon cab was just an ergo on stilts

I would sooner drive the Marathon 2 with the Fuller we had than the 1975 DAF F2000 we owned with the “backwards” ZF splitter !!!

Yeah that’s what i was saying the layout and noise insulation was much better though so if they had kept the layout the same and lowered the stilts a bit they would have had a better cab than the original

Was that the one with the split screen?

No it was an S reg (1978) Marathon 2 with the TL12 and Fuller 9 speed. Cab had the “brown” trim same as the Bison / Buffalo.

I was thinking of the ones before that model Wilsons Transport at Bradford had one.In fact they had one right up to closing their doors in the late 2000s

Must have had better luck than us, ours proved to be very unreliable, in fact I wish I had never seen the damn thing !!!
