Hi Dennis, I spoke to my friend in Workington this evening a fount of knowledge on all things BRS in West ■■■■■■■ having worked there most of his life ending up in management. UAO 61 circa 1957 was supplied new to Howgate the driver being Ronnie Thompson who later became dispatch manager for Tyne Brand Products factory at Maryport and who loaded me numerous times too in the mid 1960s. This and two other Octopuses were run on the Sheffield trunk each night for a number of years. BRS were the exclusive hauliers for DEC and the Robsons Foden would have been in as a sub contractor.
JWG ran out of the Workington Steelworks with railway lines pig iron etc although part of British Steel , as were DEC but operated as separate entities.
DEC produced the majority of steel making plant components for all the steelworks in the UK and other steelworks abroad especially South Africa.
I knew some of JWG’s drivers particularly the one who drove the LAD Octopus. RWB scared the living daylight from him late one night while transhipping a load from it when broken down outside Cockermouth Castle telling him about the ghost of the Grey Lady of Cockermouth Castle who was supposed to haunt that area. A good hand at embroidering a story RWB had the poor lad scared to death.

Many thanks Gerald for your informative “craic” particularly about our old Marra RWB ! Typical of him !! Well there was plenty of Ghosts and Gouls aboot in Ireby eh! As I was just a mere lad I can just about remember being in the original JWG garage on the low side of the road through Embelton one evening with one of the Lads ( not just sure which one) but it was on a Trader. So would ADB do a bit of subbing for JWG maybe ? but I reclon I would only be about 10 or 11 at the time but that is my distant memory ! But in the later years when I was a grown up Haulier and got to know the Grahams I am certain that both George and Maurice had been present. Cheers Dennis.
I am not sure if they hauled for JWG Dennis but they certainly knew them, I remember in 1962 collecting a new LAD cabbed Albion Clydesdale from their Embleton garage when I was driving for Jim Lawson, they had painted the Clydesdale. RW & I went about 4 years later to inspect a new Scania 4 wheeler one Saturday morning just after they got the Scania agency but did not do a deal.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

I recall in 1969 John McGuffie from Grange over Sands bought a new G reg Atky 4 wheeler from JWG ( which Tys Burridge acquired later) John then went onto buy a new Scania 80 unit in about 70/71 at the time that carriers licencing was changed. He then bought a new Atky unit from JWG ( Maurice) at this time I think George Graham had split with JWG and moved to Carlisle to continue with Scanias as a Dealer via Union Trucks of Newcastle. In the meantime John McGuffie was delivering loads new 45 gal drums from Rheems in Bristol via a tie up he had with a Bristol haulier and they changed over at Penkridge every night. McGuffies Southbound loads were mainly loads of paper from Beetham to Midsomer Norton until he got kicked out for letting them down. The jammy b-------- then got the job of delivering the drums from Aintree to Marchon when the Bristol job fizzled ! I bought him out in 1974 when he was just about to lose that job. He kept in with Puzzle by buying another two Atky units as well as 7 Crane Fruehauf trailers from about '71 to '73. John is no longer with us but he sure had more lives than a cat business wise and had a knack of being able to organise an operation but then just get bored or whatever and let it slide. I can say that the drum traffic we inherited from Aintree was a very lucrative seam of traffic and then we continued as regular subbies of JWG and also Hauliers out of Marchon. Prior to buying John McGuffie out we had been subbies of JWG via Bewick Tpt off and on and I had also bought three trailers off Puzzle as well. Cheers Dennis.
This picture shows Byrom Street, A59 (Left to right) in Liverpool in 1965. Just 200 yards to the left is the Mersey Tunnel
main entrance at Old Haymarket. Going up the picture is Great Crosshall Street in the direction of the Pier Head and
River Mersey. The dustbin lorry is a Dennis Pax of Liverpool Corporation Cleansing Department. The TK Bedford appears
to be making a bad right turn. I am trying without success to identify the signwriting and picture on the side of the van.
Ray Smyth.
A really bad right turn, the image on the Bedford looks like a cat on the edge of a box, maybe a matchbox.
Dave…
Even with that little thing he’d have a job getting round there without crossing the painted islands. Mind you, he’s making no attempt. Now if that was a loaded eight wheeler I’d forgive him.
It’s a nice quiet scene isn’t it, not much like today.

Did Herr Sutherland aka Mr. Scanny designed that advert? As it’s got the words “reliable” and “Scania” on the same page…
I feel so sorry for Harry Redknapp, He is 72, and still having to work 50 hours a week,
making and delivering Jam Roly Poly cakes around Poole, Bournemouth, and Sandbanks.

Here’s one going back a little but nice outfit for the time eh, Buzzer
Mandator V8. I wonder if it turned without the sleeper extension catching the 'fridge unit. It looks very close.

My old chap drove a J-type Morris van. Usually with the odd calf or pig in the back, it occasionally took me on holidays to the Land of His Fathers.
Thanks to DEANB, Ray Smyth and Buzzer for the pics
and all the craic
.
Been travelling, snaps from Leeming Bar.
