Oh, really? That must have been after my time! You can’t beat a bit of ash for making your elbow sore.
I meant Albion replaced the wood. What about the handbrake? Designed by the same company who marketed molegrips, Blood Blister co
If you mean the multi-pull ratchet type then i loved it, that meant i was driving a real wagon. That is once i’d gotten the hang off releasing the bloody thing

Without trapping your fingers you mean ? No trouble on that score with one ERF I had, it released itself as soon as it realised that I was far enough away from it. One time, when I was on the trailer unloading, I heard a click, a shiver, and off we set across a road and were only stopped by a low wall, which promptly fell over along a 30 foot length.
No chance of trapped fingers in my Invincible though, on or off it rested down at floor level with the trigger uppermost. I was told that it was a brilliant idea and that you only had to stamp your left heel on it to release. But that heel is connected to the foot that you need on the clutch in order to let it in and do an orderly take off.

I took a S21 for plating, the mechanic,Les, says" give the park brake a ■■■■ good pull,we don’t want it failing on that! " He then gave me a bludy great spanner " give it a wallop with this to get it off! " Did the job mind.
Two comments , how about the old Atkies where you had to step over the ratchet to get in ? And a little tale about Hanson’s from Wakefield . Driver reckoned he could go down Chunal into Glossop in top gear , “Won’t your brakes overheat? No bother I’ll use the deadman at the bottom “ . I often wonder if he made it .
^^^^^^^ the same position ratchet hand brake in the Seddon I had. Getting out of the cab one day my trouser leg hem caught on the end of the brake…I very nearly went out of the cab head first.

I tripped out of an Atki as a passenger and headed for the floor, my foot caught in the seat mounting and I was left hanging upside down. The driver had to get out and lift my shoulders to take weight off while I twisted the foot free.
AEC handbrake by the door. I’ve told the story before, but wearing my donkey jacket with the buttons done up, I jumped out, (as you did in those days) handbrake went up the back of me jacket and there I was, hanging. Paddy lifted me off (no chance of undoing the buttons) then after having a good laugh, I thought, ‘my back’s sore and so is me arse.’ The lever had raked me back and me arse had hit the step on the way down.
Bedford TK handbrake lever was a proper ‘knacker catcher’ when it got out of adjustment! Of course you were supposed to exit the cab properly (backwards) but most drivers just leaped out feet first over the wing.
A Mk 3 AEC MM with a ‘sturdy’ ratchet handbrake. Old Tom Ward (now deceased) was delivering fuel oil to Halifax swimming baths. Now it was Toms regular motor and why the hell he left the handbrake lever in the rearmost position…only Tom knows. To cut a long story short, when he’d been in to the baths to locate the boiler man and get the keys for the delivery point…he saw straight away that the aforementioned AEC wasn’t where he’d left it.
Yes, the lever had dropped forward, knocked the ratchet off, and away the AEC went, down the street, by itself. It collected a few parked cars on the way down the street but luck was in …a very sturdy stone wall stopped any further progress.
Forum members will be pleased to hear that the wall suffered only very minor superficial damage…the AEC and the cars weren’t so lucky.

The regular exit from an Atki was to leap out, as a “young un” it was easier than turning round and climbing down. My mistake was I did this automatically, but! I was getting out of a piggy back broken down tractor luckily I only sprained one ankle!! regards Kev.

More of a hop after the leap Coomsey!!
Ref Guy Invincible rachet hand brake. I would rack it on then when depressing the clutch ready to pull away
lift the hand brake lever and angle my knee against it, then when releasing the clutch let the lever drop at the same time as the drive took up.
If nothing else it sounded good, a very satisfying bang.
