The petrol station in that picture is still there now BP and they’ve just started extending the shop as COOP have taken it over , I deliver to the unit on the R/D side which is a lovely blindside reverse and you hope no trucks are on the pumps or you cant get the trailer straight to back in to yard or get back out when tipped

The one in the pic was in the eastern dock and is long gone.
I think you are thinking of the one coming into Dover from the A20.

Are you sure? It looks like the sweep round to take the climb up Jubilee Way to me. But it is a long time since I was there.

Just done some google street viewing and this is at the dock entrance at bottom of A2 as the row of houses is still there

1If the first truck is definitely a Foden, what about the other one in the background? Commer, Dodge?
I would say it’s a Commer Maxiload like the one in the pic, last wagon I drove but not with that trailer which had a Mandator put under it.
Oily
You could be right at that, but it still looks a bit messed about with. I drove one too, I did appreciate the flat floor but not the screaming 2-stroke that is probably the reason why I’m so hard of hearing 60 odd years later. Is there anyone left I can sue?

Certainly not a spaceship nor a sputnik unless comparing the outside temperature of both with that inside the cab on a hard frosty morning the common name amongst most hauliers was the S21 Mickey Mouse cab. I owned and operated an 8 wheeler with Gardner 6LW for 4 years maximum speed 42 mph. ■■■■■■■■■■ Motor services had some Bristol SC4LKs that were nick names “Sputniks” due to their lack of power and speed as drivers struggled to get enough speed up to be able to get into top gear due to the long pause waiting for the revs to drop before engaging top cleanly and without the bus coming to a standstill on a slight incline.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
I had one of those Mickey Mouse Fodens as an 8-wheel powder tanker for K&M Hauliers of Hucknall. it was only a stopgap between other motors but I was happy to move on. In the middle of winter I was driving shirtless with the windows open, no, not an exceptional heater for the day but half the engine cover was missing.
Apart from that I reckoned it a good cab in its day.
Looking South on the A74, when it was still the A74. The ERF looks like it could
be Albright & Wilson from Whitehaven, and the train is heading North to Glasgow.

A bit further up on the A74 was The Crawford Arms Hotel, and in the late 1990s,
a 3 course evening meal and lorry park was £8.00, I wonder what it costs now.
The 2nd picture is Paul Roberts setting off Southbound at 5 a.m. in a Leyland DAF
45 Series which was 10tons G.V.W., it weighed 6 tons, so could only carry a maximum
of 4 tons, but it suited our regular work for the Military and Police work that we did
for Remploy Frontline for 17 years. It had a 165hp ■■■■■■■ engine and regularly
returned 18 MPG. The 3rd picture sees the Leyland Daf on the A62 en route from
Oldham to Huddersfield, and the 4th picture is a Mercedes Benz 1821 that I had for
10 years, during which time it covered just over 500,000 miles. Ray Smyth.

The E.R.F. heading north on the A74 is Charles Alexander from Aberdeen.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
