Hi, Folks , Is the Dodge 6 wheel tanker got an AEC ,or 354 Perkins in ,Cheers Barry

It was before my time at Ballidon Barry, I know that Bill Bennet was the driver and it was built as a four wheeler but engine-wise I don’t know alas. If Barry Fearn reads this he will know for certain, he worked there many years before me. I would bet on a Perkins 6.354 myself.

One of the older fitters told me that he went to Derby with Bill and the Dodge for its annual test and called at a cafe on the way back. There was a minibus full of passengers in the truck park and Bill went to the rear of the tanker, opened the discharge flap and shouted to the inside of the tank; “we are just going for a brew, we wont be long” making out there were passengers inside! The folk on the minibus didn’t know what to make of it all!!!

Pretty sure that it was a Primrose conversion Dennis. When I started there in April 75 Tilcon had been in charge for several years (I think the group was formed around 1970?) and it was an all Foden eight wheeler fleet of around 40 trucks and 100 cars, busses and vans, although there were a few old four wheeler TK’s still in BALLIDON livery on the scrap pile and one AEC Marshal powder tanker used internally to empty the tar plant.

Ah , you’re only a stripling then Pete . When I was on the spreaders at Beswicks we sometimes did the same farms , us with quicklime and Ballidon with dust on those "old TKs ". after the spreader had done his first load the TKs had to be unloaded into the spreader , by hand ! Poor sods were soaked in sweat in summer and there could be several tippers queueing up . Ballidon liked their pound of flesh from the drivers . Dave

Yes I am still only a young lad Dave, spreading had finished when I started there and the old spreader drivers etc were found other jobs either in the quarry, blockplants, in the offices or in the garage. A few stayed on the road driving tippers or tankers though. Some contractors still continued spreading and had their lime from Ballidon or Kevin quarry, Eric Barker from Pikehall was one regular with his Albion four wheeler and his wife and lads worked just as hard as he did! The family are still in haulage nowadays.

Quite like this picture of one of Richard Read’s snow ploughs :sunglasses: . The American’s would write snow plow :open_mouth: - makes more sense except they’d still pronounce it sno plow :unamused: . Unlike we English who know it as a snough plough (pronounced snuff pluff  ) - no, ■■■■, got that wrong. Well, you know what I mean (ie u no wot I meen  ). Robert

Apologies if these have been posted before

I guess the first one is a Leyland Beaver? Strangely, I have no recollection seeing these smart bonneted Leylands durin my 8-year stay in London (1965-73), and thought they were made for export only.
