Hi Ray, as a ■■■■■■■■ haulier often driving a wagon down to Manchester in the mid 1960s I used to see these cherry coloured Fodens DGs of Joseph Roscoe in a yard on the right hand side of the A6 at Blackrod no doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong memory getting a bit hazy now. Mentioning the Metal Box at Westhoughton I have tipped tin plate there from Ebbw Vale along with one of Dennis’s mentors AHB way back circa 1965 when running together on one occasion back then after taking a load of steel railway sleepers from Workington Steelworks to Port Talbot.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Hi Larry, My running mate and I loaded off Silver Roadways for Westhoughton, I was just a new starter then whereby AHB was well established with them principally loading out of Liverpool with sugar. I went back to BOCM at Trafford Park on that trip and loaded cattle cake for home. As you say the good old days.
Cheers, Leyland 600

Nicely restored Albion at Corsley Show Wilts. It had a metal framed cab. When did they change from wood frame?

You realise how big these dumpers are when you see a normal truck parked next to them !

Mine the morning she started earning her corn 87ish. Not quite as big as 797. She 789 200t payload 6sp auto n believe 2000bhp easier to drive than the Sierra. 40mph when wound up ,down steep ramp loaded she may not necessarily come to an halt, slightly alarming for all concerned. Cat sent some engineers from France n modified disc brake cooling system. Cheers Paul

Think this is very apt as I am sure we all drew pictures like this when we were kids at school, Buzzer.

Hi Tidderson, that is a Duramin all metal cab on the Albion made at Lydney. Albions of that era had different cabs built by lots of coach / bodybuilders often in the distributors local area. Common wooden framed cabs were by Hind, Carlisle, Penman Dumfries, Holmalloy Preston, Kirkness & Innes Leith etc.
Cheers, Leyland 600

Homalloy brings back memories. A6 corridor Lancashire was home to lorry - bus manufacturers, body builders, motor engineering. Grardners Monton Eccles. Eton gears Worsley. Edbro Tipper Bodies near Farnworth. Leyland Chorley & Preston. Atkinsons Preston. Homalloy (Holmes Motor Engineering of Preston) Atkinsons Preston had many customers locally and no bother about totting up huge delivery mileage. Ridings, Bowkers, D&A. Northern Ireland Trailers (NIT) P&O. Bolton Roadways James Nuttall, Hinchcliffe Bury had a few but mainly ERFs. Smith & Robinson Manchester depot prior to move to Urmston when they were based near Bolton, Law Brothers Swinton. KEV

Thanks to TIDDERSON, DEANB, coomsey, lurpak, Buzzer and kevmorrow for the pics

Especially when they suffer brake failure and run away downhill fully loaded at Ballidon quarry, demolish the tyre bay and by good fortune squashed a fitters car on route which diverted it away from the crowded office buildings where it would have caused carnage! :open_mouth: Only the cab was damaged and the machine was recabbed and soon back in action. :open_mouth: I missed it all as I was at Reg Knowles at Somercotes getting a Foden wiring loom, it was dark when I returned to the quarry to stop on and fit it and everyone else had gone home. However one of the fitters, Bill, from the lubrication bay wandered into the garage, I asked him why he hadn’t gone home. “Can’t, my car is flat” he said. I told him that I would give him a jump start, “No, the whole car is flat” he replied and took me outside with a torch and there was his Hillman Hunter as flat as a pancake! :open_mouth: Of course he then told me what happened and showed me the wrecked tyre store etc with the AB still embedded in it. Poor Bill, his car was gone for good! “That’s not the worst of it though Pete” he said, “The Mrs bought me a new flask for my birthday a week or so ago and it was in my snap bag in the car, she is not happy about it”.

Pete.
