This old Akky was getting a container load of pasta when i pulled in to load up yesterday. I’d passed it on the road just the day before and was suprised to see an 8cylinder Gardner poking out under the sleeper, so a closer look was a must. Owner John turned out to be a cracking bloke and happy to talk about the Akky he’s owned since it was 7 years old.
John told me how he fitted it with double chassis rails to get it up to 45,000kg capabilities(42,500kg-45,000kg) is the legal gross weight for an artic in Melbourne, Australia where the Akky earns its living carting containers all week.
The 240 Gardner has been uprated slightly to 280, and drives through a twenty speed Spicer gearbox, and John reckons he uses plenty of those gears to get up some of the climbs such as the Westgate Bridge which he regularly crosses.
John had just finished loading by the time i spotted the Akky so didn’t have much time to chat, but will try and catch up with him again for more info on his Akky.
I’ve seen quite a few on the road with Detroit 60series and ■■■■■■■ planted in them but not the origional Gardners.
oiltreader:

Was drawn to the signwriting on the Mercury skip lorry.
“Skip hire and scrap metal merchants”
Doesnt that sound better than “envoiromental waste solutions and metal recycling”
Hi oilreader, my mates late brother in law drove an almost identical Foden 8 wheeler for Harry Ward back in the late 1960s based in ■■■■■■■■ This Foden and those in the previous black & white photos would have the speedometer mounted in the centre of the steering column. Some of the Ward family still live here and are in the timber business one has a large sawmill driven by a Gardner 150.
Cheers Leyland 600
