Hi Oily here is an interesting video of Newcastle trolleybuses with lots of nostalgic locations, I am sure our North East contributors will enjoy this film in the days before the city planners ruined Newcastle. There are a few other good films of North East buses which include some shots of lorrier back in the late 50s early 60s. I have fond memories of travelling on the trolleybuses from Central Station to the Haymarket bus station for onward transport by United Automobile Services to Blyth by at least 4 different routes. My favourite being the No 8 via Whitley Bay and Seaton Sluice on a Bristol KSWB decker.Cheers Leyland 600.
Nice one, thanks
noted at 4.57 mins the cops in a Triumph TR4, I remember the police in Oxford having MGAs.

Was it Oxfordshire or Bucks who had Daimler Dart cars? Canât remember which side of the border I used to see them but the 8-wheeler Atki/150Gardner wasnât a match for those SP250s!

Not Oxfordshire, apart from MGAs, I remember them having, Wolseley 6/90s and Morris Isis, the Met were the main customer for the Dart. Transported one once, only on and off the lorry, so not a proper âgoâ used to look for a bit of space in the yard to give the sporty types a wee try like Sunbeam Tiger (V8) Vauxhall Ventora, the Ventora was a Victor with a straight six Cresta engine. There was also a Viva with a bit of poke, canât remember what it was tagged with.

Inflatable deception vehicle, there were also mock tanks. During WW11 they were positioned along the south coast at various locations between Ramsgate and Hastings to kid the Germans that the plan for D Day was an assault on Calais.

This is a âPagefieldâ dustbin lorry,Reg No. KKF 346, manufactured by Walker Engineering of Wigan
in the late 1940s, one of many for Liverpool Corporation Cleansing Department, for the collection
of household dustbin contents. They were based at Breckside Park Depot, and I understand that
each lorry had 2 of the horse drawn dustcarts. The 3 dustcart loaders would leave the depot at
6.30 a.m, and proceed to the district with the horse and dustcart and commence loading the cart.
At about 8 a.m, The Lorry would leave the depot with an empty cart, and meet up with the 3 man
crew. The dustcart crew would unhitch the horse from the now full dustcart, taking with it the
horse shafts, which had little dolly wheels at the rear ends. The lorry driver would extend his
tipper rams, and lower the empty cart to the floor on a winch cable, and then load the full cart
on to the lorry by winching it up,and locking it on, then proceed to a landfill site. The dustcart
crew would then hook up to the empty cart and carry on loading domestic waste. The solid tyres
on the dustcart had a smaller diameter steel wheel on the inside of each wheel, which helped
guide the dustcart on to the lorry. Early Swap Bodies !!! Regards, Ray Smyth.
Hi, nice do you know whose Merc it was. Les.
Hi Les, I seem to remember it sat up alongside a house at South Cara just off No 4 Barrier, they had an ex prison service high capacity cell wagon or trailer which I think they were trying to convert into a horse box and somehow this Merc was involved. My photo was taken at the Burray Garage as you approach âThe Sandsâ.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Thanks, Oily. Must have been Bucks, then. I hadnât really woken up enough to know where I was at the time I was on the A40! I remember all the âsportyâ types but, like you, I canât recall what the quick Viva was called. I had a Viva HB for a couple of years and thought that if only it had an â â â â â â engine, it would have been a fantastic little motor.
