Hi Oily …clearing out some stuff I came across a DVD taken several years ago during a testing run with our new 6x6 Scania bulk water tanker over the 4WD testing ground … I took a few screen shots for you the tank was full at the time so you can imagine what kind od weight was there ■■?.. there are a few more if you like !!!
Hi Eddie , I know you have seen this before but a little nostalgic cheer will not go amiss at this time of year!- was the ‘one’ route to Littlemore or to Cowley ?
That is a jewel Ivor , my shift bus on the Oxford to Abingdon route, all of 1961. Abingdon routes from Oxford were 12, 13, and 14. No.12 along the old A34 to the end of Ock Street (opp. Walter’s Cafe) No. 13 over Boars Hill, along to The Bystander pub then back through Whitecross to Abingdon . No. 14 was Kennington through Radley to Abingdon. A few years ago when staying in Oxford at the Redbridge caravan park we were taking a wander towards town when I saw this chap approaching and recognised him (he didn’t me) I said “excuse me
could you tell me where I can get a bus to Abingdon”, his reply “yes sir, the bus stop across the other side” to which I said “will the conductor be Herbie Oliver” well you’d of thought I’d pole axed him, 40 years since we were a crew on the Abingdon run, he gasped, not you, can’t believe it, he gimme a bear hug, tears running his face, then hanging on to my hand and much to the embarrassment of my better half started regaling her with our times together.
He was a Haitian, a cracking guy, full of life, liked his Guinness “got to keep ma colour topped up man”. He was the same guy furiously ring the bell who stopped me going under the station bridge with a high decker.
Apologies for boring some or all.
The same bus is in preservation at Long Hanborough, a sweet machine, pre-selector with a musical bark from the exhaust
Oily
PS No.1 route in my time was Blackbird Leys or Florence Park or Minchery Farm or Sandford to the Rail Station

Thats a nice story Eddie and thanks for the reminder of the station bridge , it took very many casualties over the years did’nt it . on BRS loaded out for Avonmouth with the high loads from Nuffield our route had to be Witney, Cirencester, Sodding Chippy etc-not a favourite run but what the hell ,paid by the hour, 16 mph average on 20 plate ,no pressure -obviously i loved the BRS way.
I never took to the PSV work and kept to the private hire side of things- very busy summers ,long winters and not a lot of money in it but used to get work from South Midland at times on relief trips Victoria/Cheltenham to break the monotany .
i was infront of this guy b4 i dug meself out and slipped in beside him as plough cleared main street but we all helped eachother cups of tea etc. some guys running low on fuel and def
Thanks to lurpak, chrisb01 and stevejones for the pics real snow eh, there’s me complaining about sub zero 1" thick hoar frost this past week, much preferable to what you have Steve.
