Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Hi Oily, 54 years ago last Wednesday 24th Aug 1962 I became Jim Lawson,s first official driver on a Leyland Comet hauling pulpwood to Ellesmere Port when not on livestock haulage. In 1969 I bought an ERF 66GX six wheeler off the late Jeff (J.G) Stamper the best wagon I ever owned or operated.
Cheers, Leyland 600

Dated around 1950.

Not originally owned by that co, the owner bought it as he said he served his apprenticeship on these.

He also had a same model truck at another location, and was waiting to buy his original first Bedford bus (same model) he owned that he had tracked down.

He also told me a tale of another operator he knows, who came across the same model that was his first bus.
It was a complete basket case in a scrap yard and he is sending it away for restoration, and expecting to spend in excess of 100k to sort it. :open_mouth:
Obviously thinks more of nostalgia than his finances.

On the previous page I mentioned getting rid of some power tools, one of the respondents to the adverts called to view a table saw which he bought also managed to sell him an air compressor, well we yarned a bit about days gone by and the like, turned out he was a farmer and haulage contractor, should’ve twigged something re the chariot he was driving, anyway this is one of his wagons I snapped recently.
Oily

Is it only me who thinks those big Scania ‘show boats’ look ever so slightly ridiculous?

Aye i’ll agree with you brian , a wagon /lorry /truck is a tool to to the job with . keep them clean , keep them running and everyone’s happy . I suppose the modern generation spend a lot of time watching their reflection in the shop windows . I don’t know any other job where the workforce spend their own time and money on the bosses behalf . I’ve never seen a mechanic polishing his toolbox at night . dave

Picture the scene:- Dennis Bewick gives Harry Gill a Scania show boat…“now Harry, I want you to look after it, wash it and clean it every day and be sure to keep the wheel nuts polished”. Harry would be too shocked to respond.

Sorry Mr Oiltreader, we’re hi jacking your topic…back to the excellent photos.

I noticed that as well, He had just started to pull away when I got that last shot, not sure if that had something to do with it

It has a “oscillating” 5th wheel on it which pivots both ways. A lot of heavy haulage vehicles are fitted with them. 3 inch jaws as well. Colin.

I love your insights into heavy haulage techniques and practices on these thread, Colin. They are always informative and reflect your early experiences in the '70s. Robert
