Nice one Buzzer
that cab brings back memories, tho’ it was a Mercury I had for a while, positives for me were the gearbox including the overdrive, great when you got it into its stride, all round view from cab combined with good mirrors also a good heater and not forgetting the one sweep down/up window handle, comfortable cab compared to the LAD cabbed Comet 400 (driver’s seat, ouch) I had previously. On the other hand, there seemed to be a heaviness to it, almost ■■■■■■■■■■ in comparison to the Comet and no more able. I had it new for the best part of a year during which the only downtime was a problem with the manifold down pipe cracking, modification of engine mountings sorted that.

Shame you didn’t have access to our fitter, Oily. My Mercury would pull almost as well as a Mandator after the lad had worked his magic! Have to agree about that lovely gearbox- if memory serves, it came from Thorneycroft, didn’t it?
Thanks to servo for the pics
with a name like Tucker Jameson, got to be a character with a moniker like that, and google tells me yes hexham-courant.co.uk/feature … 86948a1-ds no doubt well known by you Northumbrian chaps.

No idea about origins of gearbox ROF, I would describe it as a long stride wagon, dual carriageway and motorway brilliant, not so good on single carriageway uphill and down dale with a load of cars which could be on the top heavy side for overdrive use which if I remember rightly was forward and towards the steering column, long time ago

Hi I can well remember Old Tucker from when I was going around the marts ( Hexham, Gateshead, Newcastle and then Tyneside )during the school holidays. Him and my Dad would often have a cup of tea at one of mart cafes. By the time I got my HGV in the early seventies he had just about retired.
Not sure exactly what happened but they packed in with the livestock and Young Tuck just kept one motor going. Not sure which generation is running the job now.

The Tucker I knew was a well known face at Wetherby in the seventies and eighties, he would be about my age ( I’m 69 now), he actually had Tucker Junior on the front of his
motor. Haven’t seen him for many years now. Regards Kev.
There was only ever going to be one winner there, Larry, no matter who was in the right!

Now then… make and where
answer tomorrow for those who are a bit shy

Just a wild guess, really- Oshkosh? Really like the gun ring on top of the cab: just the sort of modification we could have done with on the South Wales convoys during the Maggie v. Arthur wars!
Oshkosh was my first thought as well ROF but not right.

Hi Larry, not a GMC.
Just twigged on the Old North East Haulage thread you’ve had a birthday, long may they continue with Good Health, Sunday cruising down the Tyne eh, that took me back to my youth and buying song sheet music and gramophone records
of which we had both the sheet music and record in our house of Cruisin’ Down the River.

Autocar is the answer, it took a bit of digging to find the info worldwarphotos.info/gallery/ … many-1945/

Another Autocar model of the same era in preservation.
