Pete – according to my “bible” if it’s a 4 cylinder, either petrol or oil, Albion or Gardner, it’s a CX1, if a 6 cylinder Albion oiler then a CX3. Apparently the 4 cylinder had a longer load area and could carry a 1/4 ton more due to the shorter, lighter engine. Sadly we can’t see the engine in that picture so we may never know!

One or two for the bus enthusiasts. Some taken in Worswick St Station Newcastle and others around the Newcastle / Washington area

All from the fifties / sixties and early seventies

Washington Chemical Works, later known as Newalls Insulation

Fire Brigade in Washington including a real tanker incident

The old Washington Urban District Council later swallowed up by Sunderland City

Showmen’s winter camp used to be in Speculation Place behind the New Inn in Washington

One or two more from Washington. Wonder what H & S would have to say about the fellas in the back of Blythe’s Brick waggon.

Anybody know who the Scammell belongs to.

Thanks to Leyland600, servo88 and tyneside    fine lot of pics, love the old black and white stuff. When we got our first house in Cowley Oxford our next door neighbours were from Washington, nice family, quite a bit older than us, so some canny advice from time to time. Did a load or two of Fiats from Dover to Newcastle, leaving the old A1 at Chester le Street through Washington to Gateshead and Newcastle, the dealer was right by St James’s Park, Irvines I think, tho not sure, 50 odd years ago, Commer Perkins R6 and Carrimore wagon and drag, oh that I could go back and do it again   .

Hi Tyneside, Thanks for posting a great set of nostalgic north east bus photos especially at Worswick St with the Northern Guy single decker and the Routemaster line up interspersed with a Sunderland & District Atlantean. I wonder how many viewers realise that these AECs had Leyland 0/600 engines fitted. Also great shot of SDO Tiger Cub with Saro body would have looked good in colour. I seem to remember the platform bays at Worswick St had large stones against the near side kerb for buses to drop back on after pulling up. No air handbrakes in those days. VOSA guys would have a fit today yet many bus companys operating AECs & Daimlers with fluid flywheels carried a wheelchock on a long chain in the cab for such locations as this.
As for the guys in the Blyth Brick wagon they should have had a ratchet strap over them then they would be safe !!!
Cheers, Leyland 600
