Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Hi Haddy, the AEC Marshall in your photo looks like a Wisbech Roadways motor an offshoot of Knowles Transport of Wimblington.
Cheers Leyland 600

More from your side of the borders Oily, regards servo

Wells Next the Sea - a mark of where the water came to has been engraved on the wall, opposite the quay (so it came over the harbour wall and across the road)

I’ve seen it lapping the quay at normal high tide

Lovely picture of the AEC - I have watched wagons being loaded there in the 70s

Don’t talk about sugar beet … Anyone that drove to North Norfolk in the 70s (probably before too) and got behind a tractor & high trailer brimming with sugar beet will know that one good bump in the county road and a “concrete football” was propelled at your car bonnet or windscreen! :open_mouth:

There was no harbour wall there in those days it was all flat when we used to work off the quay. I don’t know when it was built but when there is a threat of an extra high tide the flood boards would be placed in the gaps which normally allow the fisherman’s vehicles on and off the quay.Cheers Haddy.

A bit before my time, the Gt. Yarmouth Port and Haven Authority would, in busy times, send a gang of dockers up to Wells to work. Come to think of it they were sometimes sent to Ipswich as well, both ports being 50 odd miles from Yarmouth.

Haddy - it was flat then, I meant quay not wall - my bad

Looks like this was taken during a foot and mouth epidemic judging by the straw disinfectant mat that every vehicle had to drive over to minimise the risk contamination.

He,s a few modern ones regards servo88
