Lanchester looks a quaint old place and with chester in the name would definitely have Roman connections.
Another couple from the Western Isles, at Creagorry, Isle of Benbecula, D R Macleod along with other islands based transport firms are the very lifeblood of the communities where at this present moment they are dreading the looming threat of Calmac ferry staff going on strike.
Oily
Mention of Lanchester reminds me that there was a car manufacturer by the same name. I remember they had a pre-selector gearbox- you selected the next appropriate gear, then when you wanted it to shift you pressed the clutch pedal. Anyone else remember them?

Yes I certainly do remember them, The gear shift on the steering colum , Notched & numbered IIRC, The good old motor car days when I was a young lad, Regards Larry.
Your on about old cars spotted these at Eyemouth in someone,s garden. Regards servo88
I used to go caravanning with a member of the Stamper family from Culgaith, he had moved to Cornwall when he came out of the RAF so had no direct connection with the transport firm though. Big Gardner users at one time.
Pete.
Do you like your Fodens Pete ? regards Gordon

Yes Gordon, they earned me good money for 27 years and never let me down! As the saying goes “They did what it said on the Tin” and apart from two years on a Sed Ak 400 I never drove anything else.

Indeed I do, too. My dad had a pre-war Lanchester 14 from 1952 to 1958 (when he swopped it for a VW Beetle). Maroon and black, ash framed body, red leather upholstery, pre-selector gearbox fluid flywheel and all! Oddly enough, I visited a classic car gathering in Shropshire only last week and there was a Daimler convertable there - identical in every respect except for two doors instead of four and the fluted rediator (and no roof, of course!) The only one I have seen since 1958, although I have seen the odd ‘rounder-bodied’ later model Lanchesters around.
Steve
Lanchester was a very old co. and I think some go on the Veteran London to Brighton run. They were part of B.S.A. up to 1930 and were then made by Daimler.I think some were more expensive than Rolls Royce and Royalty ran a few
That’s one of the brilliant things about TNUK- You’ve only to mention that something from years ago has popped into what masquerades as a brain and you find that others know more than you about the subject!
Many thanks, chaps. I remember serving petrol to a gent who owned a Lanchester when I was a baby-faced spanner chucker. On tickover it sounded just like my grandmothers sewing machine!
Pete ,He,s an old Foden from the fairground scene, taken at Eyemouth. I was brought up on Foden 8 wheeler,s with the 2 stroke & Gardner engines, stilll got a bottle jack from a S20 in my garage. regards Gordon.
