Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Even though I posted " shovelling coal " I just noticed what looks like a big hammer on the deck, was that for breaking any large bits up before bagging ? Buzzer.

Leyland600:
Hi Larry , Wee aye man its Blyth photographed just rather further up from the Seven Stars pub. I spent all my holidays as a boy at J.W. Colpitts ship repair yard where Eddie Ferguson House now stands in the days when the all the staithes were in operation and the river was really busy full of colliers either loading or waiting to load coal for the London, Shoreham and Poole power stations. Plenty of coal dust blowing about then but happy days. Take a look at the 2nds link posted below. The staithes shown to the right of the collier Spray are on the site of the present day bauxite silos with the South Staithes and Low Quay to the left of of the ship.
Regards, Leyland 600.

Aye Larry I remember the High Ferry very well and Hughes Bolkow’s shipbeaking yard acrosss the river behind the ferry, One of those colliers moored to the left belongs to Stevenson Clark Ltd of London. I used to collect all the various ships funnel markings that came into Blyth and a had a little book with them all drawn in and coloured with crayons. I can still remember those markings as I can remember the three colliers lined up in the river shown in my link on the previous posting. The Cormain owned by William Cory Ltd, London, Lady Carrington, Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) and Queensland the most modern ship in the Queenships Shipping Coal Co, London.
Cheers Leyland 600.

Oh hell that shovelling coal photo will have having a nightmare tonight I worked for a coalman at Fauldhead colliery at Kirkconnel for 6mths and as well as the bags wee had sections in the body held shut by a pin in the middle of each one to take out the miners concessionary coal you usually had 4 tons on and it was fine as long as the next pin had’ny jumped out as then you had 2 ton lying and had to shovel one back on. We also did the schools coal Wanlockhead school was 6ton shovelled on tip it and shovel it down the hole into the cellar and now and again you had to go down and shovel it back in 2 goes to get it all in the cellar so by the time you had finshed you had shovelled 24tons, Eddie.

Wimp  try shovelling 14 tons up and over from a rail truck into an Atky 8 wheeler. It nearly killed me and I was only a young fella then. It was at a little mine somewhere in Sth Wales, the loading grab had broken down big style so it was a number 9 shovel for me. It took me the best part of the day.
Think about it, the rail truck was full, no side doors or any way to get to the bottom of the heap so I had to start shovelling from the top of the pile and work my way down.

Seen on the A6 climbing Shap on Sunday May 18th. A 1950s Albion Clansman of Jim Dykes in front of me meets William Hague Atkinson 8 wheeler followed by William Hunter Leyland Octopus then David Pickup’s Foden S21 Sam Longson tipper. Just like the 1960s pre motorway when wagons of this era were meeting travelling in both directions on Shap. I was taking part in the Alan Burns memorial rally which met the returning rally which ran up to Shap village from BCVM at Leyland.

More A6 and Shap photos on May 18th 2014.

Hi “Leyland600” ,
Sorry I couldnt join everyone for yesterdays gathering on Shap Fell summit .
However , I took some photographs at Carnforth Truckhaven , and I hope to show them later this week.

No greatcoats needed for warmth , or snow chains used , when ascending from the Jungle Café`s location  :unamused:

It bloody nigh on killed me but there was no alternative, grab loader was knackered, I was in Sth Wales wanting to get home.
Happy days eh?

Thanks to Leyland600 for the pics  Shap eh  , what memories that brings, when going south I still sometimes leave the motorway at junction 39, just for old times sake. Two Cowley to Edinburgh or Glasgow a week, always one drop with a return load from Linwood. At The Jungle we used to meet up with a guy, Mick, he was a character, he was on for Enfield Cables,… anybody remember them …he had an ERF artic and with rolls of cable on would romp away from us, stayed in the same digs at Carlisle, he was on two a week Enfield /Glasgow, with empty reels return load.
Edit I’ve been sorting through the marbles and it was E E Howes of Brimsdown that Mick was on for, contracted to Enfield Cables, sorted.

From the Highland capital.

Greenore Ferry Services.(12).jpg

Buzzer:
Today we have a look at Preston, Buzzer.

Greenore.jpg

Hi Buzzer, Circa 1968/9 there was a dock strike at Preston consequently the Irish ferry services moved some of their operation to Silloth. I was involved in carrying those curved roof Containerway boxes and Lancashire flats from Silloth unloading them at various destinations then loading them back to Silloth for onward shipment to Ireland. I was using a S21 cabbed Foden 8 wheeler at the time, all the boxes and flats were either roped or chained down dependant on their design no fancy twist locks in those days. !!!
Cheers Leyland 600

th.jpgHere’s a couple more of Preston docks for Leyland600, cheers Buzzer.
