Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Leyland600:
Hi Oily, a couple of comments to make regarding the Albion Cheiftains just posted. RSG 261 has a mid 1950s style cab built by Kirkness and Innes a Leith company I believe. JHH 249 is an ex J & W Watt motor which probably spent a large part of its life doing Carlisle to London night trunks, it is a nicely presented wagon residing in the Dumfries Thornhill area.
Cheers, Leyland 600

I was in digs in Aberdeen (1956) the husband was on with J G Barrack and his wagon was a Chieftain with a similar cab, it looked the business, gold lettering on green with coach line panels.

Hi, Ohio USA.
Les.

oiltreader:
Thanks to neversweat1 and Buzzer for the pics  … back to the previous page and the neversweat1 FWD pic, there’s a fair chance it had an AEC engine as AEC had connections, these excerpts thanks to Wikipedia
A British subsidiary was set up at Slough in 1921. In 1926, the British FWD, also known as the Quad, was produced with a larger 70 bhp engine.

In 1932, AEC took a controlling interest in the British company and began to use more standard AEC components in the Slough-built vehicles. To distinguish these from imported U.S. FWD vehicles, they were marketed under the name Hardy. Production ceased about 1936, but AEC exploited its experience with all-wheel drive in its Second World War Matador (4x4) and Marshall (6x6) vehicles.

Garford.
1909-1933.
Elyria,Ohio,USA,to 1915,then
Lima,Ohio,USA,1915-1933.
Makers of motor trucks, buses and motorcoaches, the company was taken over by Relay Motors, formerly of Wabash,Indiana,USA,then Lima,Ohio,in
1927…the company went bust in December 1932 and was taken over by Consolidated Motors which made Relay and Garford motor vehicles, but failed to make a profit.

The foundations for the famous British Gilford Motor Company and it’s motorcoach, lorry and bus range were largely inspired my Garford motor vehicles, since the founder of Gilford,E.B.Horne and Company,London N7,imported Garford motor vehicles in to the United Kingdom.

The red-orange Statens Vegvesen - operated lorry,PC 9331,is a FWD HAR-O1 4x4.

In regard to Oiltreader’s comments on the FWD SU-COE,here are some details:-
FWD SU-COE,PERKINS DIESEL-ENGINED,4x4 SHOWMANS BALLAST DIESEL ROAD LOCOMOTIVE,FOT 556,VANGUARD.April-May 1947 Southampton.T.Noyce and Sons.
Had a Waukesha petrol engine from new,was re-engined with a Leyland diesel engine, has been recently restored and has been re-engined with a Perkins diesel engine and fitted with power assisted steering. As to exactly what model diesel engines they were-are I don’t know at present.

A lorry in “Newspaper Livery” Actually,I think it could be a trial example of the forthcoming new Scania heavy lorry range - what will it be called
I wonder:6-Series?.or R-Series (again) or something new and original (for Scania)?

Here is some of what I said in my previous post:“The foundations for the famous British Gilford Motor Company and it’s motorcoach, lorry and bus range were largely inspired my Garford motor vehicles, since the founder of Gilford,E.B.Horne and Company,London N7,imported Garford motor vehicles in to the United Kingdom.”

And here are some photographs of Gilford motorcoaches and a lorry-based van.Although Gilford made buses and lorries, their most popular motor vehicles by far were their motorcoaches

And this is the only known surviving Gilford Hera Motorcoach,WG 1620,ex-Alexander YG49…it’s been without it’s Wycombe motorcoach body
since heaven knows when - it was in chassis cab form in 1973 after having been used as a storage platform on a farm for years at Earls Colne,QV
Buses Annual 1969  It was rescued by Ted Heslop,at Hexham and now resides at the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum awaiting a new replica motorcoach body!
At least one other Gilford Hera motorcoach,WG 2322,from the same fleet, was converted into a lorry with a flat body.

The old and the new.

Saw these 2 in Sanquhar earlier this morning. The Iveco at Sreg is getting on a bit whereas the Merc looks fairly new. I noticed the grass round the bottom o the Merc cab could do with a trim.

This worse-for-wear Leyland Bison tipper was perched on a narrow strip of excavated roadway , and being filled to full capacity.
God knows what might have happened if the trench side collapsed . :open_mouth:
But ,…there again , the Maltese aren`t known for being H. & S. conscious. :unamused:

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

A little further along the roadway  , was this Dodge 50 Series , carrying the pipes to be used.
With plenty of rear overhang , the pipes could easily be slid rearwards with the tipper body being raised a little.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.
