I watched this on telly yesterday evening, The Golden Age of Coach Travel if you missed it have a look here bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 … ch_Travel/
it’s an hour long, some great stories, like the Midland Red, Birmingham to London coach, taking advantage of the newly opened M1 and capable of 80mph+ but as the driver said we keep at 70.
Oily

I have had a look in Wikipedia and found this with regard to the Midland Red Motorway Express, built in house and a legend in its day.
1959: The introduction of the CM5T, a turbocharged coach capable of almost 100 mph, for non-stop motorway services. The Birmingham-London express coach service launched on 2 November - the same day that the M1 motorway was opened. CM5T designation indicated by ‘M’ high speed (Motorway) capability and by ‘T’ fitted with passenger toilet facilities.

and thanks to Pete Edgeler a fine example, yes a coach on a lorry thread but very much part of the transport scene in my heyday
Oily

Quickly back to lorries and the north.

Hey harry my man your appreciation of the effort is welcome and I must say there’s many a day I sit down for the days contribution and think what will I post today that will get some recognition or feedback (hopefully positive  ). My north stuff input, I can accept might not be of much interest to some, if that is the part that is boring you. What would you like see or read   and I’ll try and oblige.
My first post today I thought would be a bit of a diversion with the TV programme link. You can please some some of the time but not all all of the time

Hi Oily, A problem that cropped up with Midland Red’s high speed coaches was the fact that the rear luggage boot was taking in water when travelling in heavy rain, the boffins could not understand why until I believe the chief engineer himself agreed to be shut in the boot and taken down the motorway in heavy rain where he discovered by the light of his torch that water was being driven back up the two small bore forward angled water drainage pipes due to the air pressure being built up. They turned the pies round facing backwards and the problem was solved.
Cheers Leyland 600.

plenty of appreciation from me oily , i know those roads and the lorries like the back of my hand . we wanted to move to sutherland for years , but family ties got in the way . with a dicky heart and vascular problems now it ain’t going to happen , it’s a long way from kinlochbervie to inverness if my health should fail . none of that dims the pleasure i get from this thread . counting down to the launch date on may 31st ,here i come again !if you should happen to see a grumpy looking old sod ( wife’s words ) pulling a hymer caravan , give me a wave , cheers , dave
