Talking of markets, this is a nice shot of Leek back in the day - 1950s I should think. Old bus, various wagons and an Austin Somerset - one or two beers consumed too I wouldn’t wonder

Here are a few more Sentinels. The eight wheeler was first built by them. It only came about because of
an accident. The weight limits were penalising steamers so there was a concession which allowed eight leggers
to be built within limits. AEC built the first diesel version.
(the eight wheeler is scanned from a book and not my own picture)

01Continuing the Sentinel thread Morrisons supermarket in Shrewsbury is built on part of the old Sentinel works site, to commemorate this there are two carved wooden panels in the restaurant depicting Sentinel vehicles including a steam wagon and a Ribble / Beadle bus before Leyland could supply underfloor engined buses to Ribble.

Cheers. Leyland 600.

VALKYRIE replies:-

Morrisons Supermarket Shrewsbury also ought to have a Rolls-Royce Diesel Engine on permanent display in the supermarket,to mark the fact that the Sentinel factory also produced Rolls-Royce Diesel Engines! :exclamation:  :- AND VERY GOOD ENGINES THEY WERE TOO! :exclamation:  For example -

Retired Old ■■■■:
When I first had the pleasure (!) of attending Liverpool Docks there were still one or two Sentinel steamers dragging trailers up & down the Dock Road.

Leyland600:
First time I was in Liverpool as a lad about 8 I remember seeing steam wagons on the Dock Rd, but later in 1962 when I too had the PLEASURE !! as you call it ROF there were heavy horses pulling four wheel wagons with loads of bags on them. Of course I had plenty of time to observe them spending hours sitting in dock queues when a little bribery with the quay foreman did not work ot his terms were too high. No wonder they got upset when containerisation came in !!!

Cheers, Leyland 600

A former workmate has an ex-Criddle Sentinel. He doesn’t take it out much, but when he does, he likes to prove that these old ladies were definitely not slow!
