Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

I’m on my way to the tyre fitters, constable

Yes I would keep going with that, not likely to blow off if it’s flat. He happen wouldn’t have noticed it anyway, the perils of running on sites and travelling over all sorts of nasties! I used to dread tipping at Qualcast, Derby, you ran through water 6 inches deep and the forklifts used to run through it with stillages dropping molten steel into it, there again most foundries were the same.

Pete.

Agreed. I reckon I had more tyre disasters in foundries than I did in scrap yards. Great sharp lumps of cast iron buried under a foot of mud and water. In summer there were clouds of dust but at least you could see the obstacles.

Never had a front flat, inner twin and drawbar trailer a couple of times. a rattling tyre ring was a good indicator of a flat and no phoning a tyre man, got the wheel changing gear out with 3ft of scaffold pole for extra leverage and got on with it, not a problem.

A potted history of ERF 4 wheeler SMA 13H first registered in July 1970 and new to Woodwards of Macclesfield - Gardner 120 (engine no 173434) and chassis 19649 - bought by J Haydon 1973/74 and fitted with a silver cattle box - in service until the late 1980s - one of its finest jobs was when we used it to move house in April 1974 but it had been washed out well!

Health & Hygiene would love this 1

I love the old Market pics, so full of character
